What is Rose Water (Hydrosol)?

Rose water is a natural hydrosol from the Damask rose (Rosa damascena), the most valued rose for cosmetic use. Our Rose Water comes from France and is an organically certified hydrosol.

Rose water is a byproduct of rose oil production. The delicate petals are picked at dawn and immediately distilled, because the essential components would otherwise quickly evaporate. During steam distillation, concentrated rose oil and rose water are released simultaneously. Both products carry characteristic rose fragrance components, only in different concentrations.

The water is soft, floral in scent and pleasantly cool on the skin. We have carried the fine, soothing scent with us for thousands of years since ancient Persia, where it was used as a perfume, for digestion and in rituals.

What's in Rose Water?

Rosa damascena Flower Water, potassium sorbate and citric acid. These last two are mild preservatives also used in organic foods to prevent spoilage. Without this preservation, the rose water would spoil within a few weeks.

The rose scent comes from, among other things, phenylethanol, citronellol, geraniol and nerol, natural aroma components that are released from the petals during distillation.

Deeply hydrating
Rose water has a hydrating effect on the upper layers of skin, calms and strengthens the skin. A fine choice to keep skin soft and supple, or to replenish moisture after a long day.

Balances sebum production
Rose water helps restore the natural balance of sebum production, making it a fine toner for oily or impure skin.

Refines skin texture
Through its strengthening and toning properties, rose water helps refine pores and make skin smoother.

Calming for the skin
The soft, soothing effect makes rose water suitable for virtually every skin type, including sensitive skin.

Calming for the mind
The fine rose scent has a relaxing effect. A few spritzes on the face are a welcome moment of calm during a busy day.

How to use Rose Water?

As a toner
Apply a little Rose Water to a cotton pad or reusable makeup pad and apply to cleansed skin before applying your skincare. Unlike Witch Hazel, Rose Water can be used daily as it does not dry out the skin.

As a face and body mist
Pour into a spray bottle and spray on face and body for a refreshing, hydrating moment. Lovely in summer or after a flight.

In your hair
Spray a layer on your hair as a light hair mist or leave-in conditioner. Gives your hair a light rose scent and some extra moisture.

In DIY products
Replace part of the water in your homemade lotions, masks, shampoo or soap with rose water. Gives your product a fine scent and the nourishing properties of the rose. Tip: for extra hydration, mix a little glycerin through the rose water to help retain moisture on the skin better.

In a face mask
Mix some rose water with clay for a hydrating, nourishing face mask.

Tips for using Rose Water

• Store Rose Water in a cool, dark place for best shelf life. After opening it is shelf stable for 12 months.
• Always close the bottle tightly after use.
• Want a spray bottle? Pour the Rose Water into your own spray bottle. A handy option for use as a face mist.
• Combines nicely with other hydrosols such as Chamomile Water or Orange Blossom Water to create your own scent blend.

What makes it so special?

The Damask rose is considered the highest quality rose for cosmetic use. The roses are hand-picked in the early morning, before the sun drives the essential oils from the petals. The harvest season lasts only a few weeks in May and June, and only during this short period are the tons of flowers harvested needed for one liter of rose oil. The rose water released during distillation carries all that care with it.
