What is Petitgrain Essential Oil?

Petitgrain Essential Oil is a calming, fresh oil with a scent that strikes a balance between citrus and blossom, with a light woody and herbal undertone. The Latin name is Citrus Aurantium Amara, and the oil is obtained from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. The color is light yellow to pale green.

The name "petitgrain" comes from French for "small grains," referring to the small, unripe fruits from which fragrance was originally extracted. Today, the oil is mainly made from the leaves and twigs, as this gives a higher yield and the harvest does not come at the expense of fruit production.

Petitgrain blends beautifully with other floral oils such as lavender, neroli, rose geranium and ylang ylang, with citrus oils such as bergamot and mandarin, and with woody oils such as sandalwood and cedarwood. It is a popular top note in perfumery and in calming evening blends.

How is Petitgrain Essential Oil made?

Petitgrain is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. The leaves are harvested, cut and exposed to steam, which releases the volatile aromatic components. This steam is then condensed and the essential oil separates from the water.

Because petitgrain comes from the leaves and not from the peel of the fruit, the oil contains no furocoumarins. Therefore, petitgrain is not phototoxic and can be used without restriction before sunlight exposure. This is an important difference from other oils in the citrus family such as bergamot and lemon.

How do you use Petitgrain Essential Oil?

Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on skin. For homemade care products we recommend a working dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 gram product). Read the explanation below for more information. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter.

In an evening diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in an aroma diffuser for a calming atmosphere. Combine with lavender and bergamot for a classic relaxing blend.

On your pillow for deep night's rest
Drop 1 drop of petitgrain, 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of bergamot on a tissue or pillowcase for a calming sleep ritual. Avoid dropping directly on white pillowcases to prevent stains.

In a night cream or body lotion
Petitgrain is excellent for evening care that nourishes the skin and calms the mind.

In a DIY perfume
Petitgrain works beautifully as a heart note in a refined perfume. Combine with bergamot as a top note and sandalwood as a base note.

In a day cream
Because petitgrain is not phototoxic, it can also be incorporated into day care for a fresh, calming aroma.

What is the difference with Petitgrain Bigarade?

In addition to this petitgrain, we also have a Petitgrain Bigarade in our range. "Bigarade" refers specifically to the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium var. amara). Both variants actually come from the same plant species, but Bigarade is usually standardized to a specific aroma profile from the Mediterranean region (often Italy or Spain), while our regular petitgrain is classified more broadly. Scents are close to each other.

What is special about it?

The bitter orange tree produces no less than three different essential oils:

• Petitgrain from the leaves and twigs, which you are looking at now.
• Neroli from the white blossoms, precious and soft-floral.
• Bitter Orange from the peel of the fruit, phototoxic (we do not have this in our range).

Petitgrain has been widely used in fine perfumery since the 18th century, especially in Eau de Cologne and related compositions.

Tips when using Petitgrain Essential Oil

• Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Good storage significantly extends shelf life.
• Always close the bottle tightly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its scent and effectiveness more quickly.
• Test first on a small piece of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
• Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.

Petitgrain Essential Oil is not phototoxic and can therefore be used without restriction before sunlight exposure. However, it remains important to always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.

Our practical working dosage: 1 percent
For homemade care products we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 gram product). Essential oils naturally contain allergens such as limonene, linalool and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate and you can quickly exceed the legal allergen limits. A working dosage of 1 percent gives you room to use multiple oils in one recipe without exceeding those limits.

For products that you rinse off, such as soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin always test first on a small spot and wait 24 hours before using on larger surfaces. Not intended for ingestion.
