What is it?

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a white, odorless powder that forms a powerful lye solution when in contact with water. This solution reacts with vegetable oils such as coconut oil, olive oil or shea butter and thus forms the basis of your homemade soap.

Attention:

Sodium hydroxide is a caustic substance and requires caution. Always use protective gloves, safety glasses and work in a well-ventilated area. Always add the sodium hydroxide to water (never the other way around!) to prevent splashing or burns.
