Description
What is Melissa Hydrosol?
Melissa Hydrosol, also called Lemon Balm Hydrosol, is the aromatic water that remains after steam distillation of Melissa. The scent is fresh and lemony and calming, a natural perfume from the plant.
Melissa (Melissa officinalis) is an herb from the mint family. The name "melissa" comes from the Greek word for honeybee. Beekeepers have traditionally planted melissa flowers around their beehives to attract honeybees and keep them well fed.
Our Melissa Hydrosol is organically certified by Ecocert COSMOS, obtained from fresh flowers via steam distillation. It is a fine hydrosol for sensitive skin and for a calming atmosphere.
How is Melissa Hydrosol made?
The fresh flowers of the melissa plant are processed via steam distillation. The steam carries the volatile aromatic compounds and condenses into a liquid. The essential oil floats on top, below remains the aromatic water, which is the hydrosol.
Melissa is a plant where the essential oil is very scarce and precious. Therefore the hydrosol is a beautiful alternative to utilize the properties of melissa in an accessible way.
Our hydrosol is preserved with Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (Leucidal), a natural fermentation ingredient derived from fermented radish roots. This is an Ecocert-approved natural preservative that extends the shelf life of the hydrosol without synthetic additives.

What is so special about Melissa?
Melissa has been valued by herbalists and beekeepers since antiquity. The Greek physician Dioscorides already described the plant in his work from the 1st century AD. The Arab physician Avicenna referred to melissa as a plant that makes the heart joyful. In the Middle Ages, melissa was included in countless monastery herb gardens, among others as main ingredient in Eau de Mélisse des Carmes, a famous French tincture of the Carmelites from the 17th century.
The name "Melissa" comes from the Greek word for honeybee. The plant attracts bees in large numbers, and beekeepers planted the flowers around the beehives to keep the bees healthy and fed.
