Description

What is Lime Essential Oil?

Lime Essential Oil is a vibrant, fresh and lightly tart citrus oil that evokes the tropical atmosphere of a mojito or a Caribbean cocktail. The Latin name is Citrus Aurantifolia, and the oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the lime fruit. The color is light yellow to greenish and the scent is sharp, sweet and distinctly citrus.

This oil naturally contains a high percentage of limonene (45 to 65%), alongside beta-pinene, gamma-terpinene, citral and linalool. These natural components are responsible for the recognizable aroma and the astringent, cleansing properties on the skin.

Lime blends beautifully with other citrus oils like bergamot, lemon and pink grapefruit, with spicy oils like ginger, cinnamon and clove, and with floral oils like lavender and ylang ylang. It is a popular top note in tropically inspired fragrance blends and a commonly used ingredient in homemade cleaning products.

How is Lime Essential Oil made?

Lime Essential Oil is obtained through cold pressing, also called expression or cold pressing. In this process, the lime peels are mechanically compressed, causing the oil glands in the peel to burst and release the essential oil. Because no heat is involved, the natural aroma molecules are optimally preserved. This is why cold-pressed citrus oils smell so vibrant and characteristic.

The downside of cold pressing is that the heavier, non-volatile molecules also come along. This group includes the furocoumarins. These substances give the oil its depth, but also make it phototoxic on the skin in combination with UV light. Lime belongs, together with bergamot, to the most phototoxic citrus oils.

Benefits of Lime Essential Oil

Works uplifting and energetic
The sharp, fresh aroma of lime immediately perks up the mind and helps with fatigue and mental listlessness. An excellent choice for a morning or work diffuser.

Regulates sebum production
Lime has a naturally astringent effect and can be used in formulations for oily or combination skin. It helps refine pores and bring the skin into balance.

Cleansing and degreasing
The oil has a natural cleansing effect and is therefore popular in DIY cleaning products. A few drops in a bottle of water with vinegar effectively degrease surfaces and provides a fresh scent.

A tropical top note in blends
Lime adds a vibrant, tropical character to fragrance and diffuser blends. It works especially beautifully in combination with ginger, coconut and floral oils for a vacation-like atmosphere.

How to use Lime Essential Oil?

Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on the skin. For lime, due to phototoxicity, a legal maximum of 0.7 percent applies in leave-on products on the skin. This amounts to 0.7 grams of essential oil per 100 grams of carrier oil or butter. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter. Also read the explanation at the bottom about allergens when combining multiple essential oils.

In a night serum or evening care
Lime can be a beautiful addition to an evening serum for oily or combination skin. Only apply to skin that will not be exposed to sunlight for hours afterward.

In a diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in an aroma diffuser and bring a vibrant, tropical atmosphere into the home. Combine with ginger or sweet orange for an uplifting morning blend.

In soap, shower gel or shampoo
In rinse-off products, the oil does not remain on the skin, allowing for more generous dosages. A fine choice for a fresh, energetic morning ritual.

In cleaning mixtures
Lime oil works as a degreaser and can be added to homemade cleaning products. A few drops in a bottle with water and vinegar provides a fresh scent and helps with cleaning surfaces.

In a tropical DIY perfume
Combine lime with ginger, ylang ylang and sandalwood for a summery, vibrant perfume. Also maintain the 0.7 percent limit here for leave-on applications.

Tips when using Lime Essential Oil

  • Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Citrus oils are more sensitive to oxidation than other essential oils, and proper storage significantly extends shelf life.
  • Always close the bottle tightly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its scent and effectiveness more quickly.
  • First test on a small patch of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.

Points of attention and side effects

Lime Essential Oil is strongly phototoxic. The oil naturally contains furocoumarins, a group of molecules that react with skin cells under the influence of UV light and can cause skin damage. This can lead to blistering, redness and long-lasting hyperpigmentation, sometimes for months. Lime belongs, together with bergamot, to the most phototoxic citrus oils, so extra caution is required.

According to the IFRA 51st Amendment (2023), the maximum safe dosage in leave-on products on the skin is 0.7 percent. For a care product of 100 grams, that means a maximum of 0.7 grams of lime oil. For a 30 ml serum, that is approximately 0.21 grams. Because of this phototox restriction, the IFRA limit here is also the practical working dosage, never go above it.

Pay attention when combining with other essential oils
Citrus oils naturally contain allergens such as limonene, linalool, citral and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate. Take this into account to stay within the legal allergen limits, especially when making blends with multiple citrus or floral oils.

For products that you rinse off, such as soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin, always test first on a small spot and wait 24 hours before using on larger surfaces. Always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.
