Description
What is Kokum Butter?
Kokum butter, like cocoa butter, is one of the hardest plant-based butters that exists. It has a hard, brittle structure at room temperature, but melts on the skin. Kokum butter is a non-drying oil. Non-drying oils absorb slowly and leave a layer on the skin. Despite the fact that Kokum Butter doesn't absorb quickly, it doesn't feel greasy. The layer that remains protects the skin against dehydration and moisture loss. This makes Kokum Butter extremely suitable for dry and mature skin.
How is Kokum Butter made?
The kokum tree, also called Garcinia Indica, is a 12 to 20 meter tall tree that originates from India. The fruits of the kokum tree resemble apples and the inside looks like a mandarin, but colored more red. The kokum fruit is also called the Indian mangosteen. The seeds of the fruit contain 50% butter and are dried in the sun, ground and boiled in water. The fat that rises to the surface is then skimmed off, filtered and purified and processed into kokum butter.
How do you use Kokum Butter?
Kokum Butter is hard and brittle at room temperature. It's somewhat comparable to Cocoa Butter, but feels much drier on the skin and is almost odorless. Always been looking for a butter that doesn't feel greasy on the skin? Kokum Butter is your new friend! It's a special butter that can't be compared to any other butter. It melts as soon as it comes into contact with the skin but doesn't feel greasy. After that it remains as a kind of film layer on the skin. This makes it a perfect ingredient for a lip balm, face balm or a massage bar. Kokum Butter ensures that your skin is protected against external influences.
Process the Kokum Butter in your favorite DIY creation. Often 5% to 10% in your recipe is sufficient. Don't feel like making something, and still want to use it as purely as possible? Then mix the Kokum Butter with a softer butter like Shea Nilotica or a carrier oil of your choice to make it more spreadable. Kokum butter melts at 40°C. Heat this together with your other favorite butters and oils, cool it back down and whip it up into a fluffy body butter.
Mixing tip: Mix Kokum Butter with Mango butter and Baobab Oil and make a rich body butter for dry skin. Or mix it with Beeswax, Shea Nilotica and Jojoba Oil and make a balm for the face. The variations are endless!
