Description

What is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba Oil is one of the most versatile natural carrier oils. The oil is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub (Simmondsia chinensis), which primarily grows in the arid regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. The name is actually somewhat misleading, because jojoba oil is technically not an oil but a liquid wax. This gives it a completely different composition than other plant oils.

How is Jojoba Oil made?

The seeds of the jojoba shrub are harvested and cold-pressed. With cold-pressed oil, no heat above 30 degrees is used during pressing, which keeps the natural composition completely intact. After that, the oil is filtered and ready for use. Refined jojoba oil is clear and colorless, while the unrefined variant has a golden-yellow color and a light, nutty scent.

Why is Jojoba Oil so special?

Jojoba Oil consists largely of long wax esters (especially eicosenoic acid and docosenoic acid esters) instead of regular triglycerides like other oils. This composition remarkably resembles the sebum that our own skin produces. Therefore, jojoba oil is well tolerated by virtually every skin type and can help balance sebum production.

Due to this low triglyceride content, jojoba oil also has exceptional shelf life and barely oxidizes. That's why it's often added to other, more sensitive oils to extend their shelf life.

Does Jojoba Oil solidify in the cold?

Yes, it can, and that's completely normal. Jojoba Oil gradually solidifies at temperatures below approximately 10 to 15 degrees. You'll first see cloudy wisps form, and in real cold the entire bottle can become thick and white. This is simply part of this oil and has nothing to do with quality. Let the bottle reach room temperature or warm it between your hands, and the oil will naturally become clear and liquid again.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for your skin

Suitable for every skin type
Due to the sebum-like composition, jojoba oil is well tolerated by virtually every skin type, from dry to oily and combination.

Helps balance sebum production
Because jojoba oil so closely resembles the body's own sebum, it can help signal to the skin that there's enough sebum. This is great for oily or combination skin that becomes shiny quickly.

Light and non-greasy feel
The oil feels light and absorbs quickly, without leaving a greasy film. Wonderful for daily use on damp skin or as a base for a face serum.

Great as makeup remover
Due to its mild character, jojoba oil is also suitable for removing makeup around the eyes.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for your hair

Nourishes dry and dull hair
Jojoba Oil is great for dry, porous and dull hair. The oil provides natural shine and softness without feeling heavy.

Nourishes the scalp
Due to the sebum-like composition, jojoba oil also works great for a dry or itchy scalp.

For your beard
A few drops of jojoba oil in beard and the skin underneath nourishes the hairs, feels light and softens the skin.

How do you use Jojoba Oil?

For your skin, massage a few drops of jojoba oil into cleansed, slightly damp skin. For your hair, massage a few drops into the ends and possibly into the scalp, let it absorb for about 10 minutes and wash it out with your regular shampoo. For your beard, apply a few drops to beard and skin after showering.

Tips when using Jojoba Oil

  • Jojoba Oil can solidify at temperatures below 10 to 15 degrees. This is simply part of it and restores itself at room temperature.
  • Due to the low triglyceride content, jojoba oil has exceptional shelf life and is also great to add to other, more sensitive oils to extend their shelf life.
  • Jojoba Oil is an excellent carrier oil to mix with thicker oils like Castor Oil, or with intensive oils like Rosehip Oil.

Frequently asked questions
