Instructions
Make yourself a nice cup of tea and make sure you are working in a calm, tidy space. Making your own perfume balm is a moment of pure self-care.
Fill a thick-bottomed pan with a layer of water and put it on low heat.
Hang a melting pan in it or place a heat-resistant measuring beaker in it.
Weigh all your ingredients carefully before you start.
Start by melting the Candelilla wax and the Shea Butter. Do this in a slow, calm way. Shea Butter in particular best retains its beautiful properties when it does not get too hot.
You can already combine the essential oils with each other now so that you can easily add them later. Want to adjust your scent a little? Then take a look at the usage section for how to do that.
Once the wax and the butter are completely liquid, take the measuring beaker out of the water and turn off the heat.
Now add the Jojoba Oil to the melted base and stir it through calmly. You can also choose MCT Oil or Squalane, which are also lovely in a perfume balm.
Now let the mixture cool down a little. You want it to stay warm enough to be liquid, but no longer feel super hot. This way the delicate scent molecules will remain intact later on.
Once the mixture has cooled down a little you can add the Vitamin E and the complete blend of essential oils. Stir these in gently and take a moment to take in the scent.
Pour your liquid perfume balm into a beautiful aluminium tin or amber-coloured jar, stick a personal label on it and let it harden in the refrigerator.
Usage
Gently rub your fingertip over the balm. Apply to your wrists, your neck, décolleté or behind your ears. The warmth of your skin activates the scent and provides a subtle, personal scent experience throughout the day.
Please note: Quite a lot of essential oil goes in (6% in total). This is permitted in a perfume balm if you only apply it locally to your wrists and neck. The formula as made in this recipe falls within the maximum dosages for use on the skin. The percentage of Peru Balsam, 0.4%, is the maximum that is permitted in perfume balms, so do not exceed this, because then it can irritate the skin.
Personalising: In this blend I have placed the emphasis on the scent of Peru Balsam and Vanilla, so that it smells amber-like and oriental. Do you prefer something fresher? Then you can choose to add less vanilla and more Bergamot. Do you like floral? Then you can swap some Vanilla for more Rosewood. By making the scent before mixing it with your balm you can personalise it to your taste. That is the fun of making perfume! ❤️
