Take a step back and consciously make time to take good care of yourself again. The oils and creams come out of the cupboard again, and in the evening on the sofa we're back to hunting for those beautiful, pure products that are kind to our skin. But with so many lovely things around, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Because how did it go again? Do you apply an oil first, or your day cream? And where does that toner fit in?
No worries! Especially for you (and secretly a little bit for ourselves too), we're setting out, once and for all, the right order for your skincare products. That way your bathroom moment becomes a lovely, effective ritual.
Every good skincare routine starts with a clean base. Cleansing your skin is essential to remove excess oil, dirt and any make-up. This creates a clean canvas, so the products you apply afterwards can do their job as well as possible. So never skip this step! It can help prevent clogged pores, a dull complexion and blemishes.
For normal to oily skin: A mild soap can work wonders. Try, for example, the purifying African Black Soap or the classic Aleppo soap.
For dry or sensitive skin: Soap can sometimes be a bit drying. So opt for the Oil Cleansing Method instead. Massage a nourishing oil such as Jojoba oil or Grapeseed oil into the skin and remove it with a warm, damp cloth. This cleanses your face in a gentle, hydrating way.
After cleansing, it's time for a toner. A toner, also called a hydrosol, removes the last traces of dirt and limescale from tap water, supports your skin's pH balance and gives a first boost of hydration. Spray a little onto a washable cotton pad and gently sweep it over your face.
For normal to dry skin: A soft, soothing toner such as Rose water or Chamomile water is perfect.
For oily or blemish-prone skin: Witch Hazel is your hero! It's known for its purifying and clarifying properties.
External influences can cause dead skin cells to build up, which can make your skin look dull and rough. By exfoliating, you remove these cells and reveal the radiant, soft skin underneath. Note: be kind to your skin and don't do this too often; 1 to 2 times a week at most is enough.
Mix a gentle exfoliating powder, such as our Bamboo Scrub Powder, with a few drops of water or a carrier oil. Massage it over your face with gentle circular movements and rinse off with lukewarm water.
Now that your skin is clean and prepped, it's time for hydration. A good cream or butter nourishes your skin and forms a protective layer against external influences. Prefer to make your own? Then take a look at our DIY cream recipes.
Although some oils contain a light, natural SPF, this is often not enough to fully protect your skin from the sun. During the day, if you're going to be out in the sun a lot, always apply a separate sunscreen before your cream or oil. For example, make your own Zinc Balm for natural protection.
We often get asked: do you apply an oil before or after your cream? The answer is simple: after your cream. Oils are generally heavier and create a sealing layer. This layer helps the moisture from your cream stay in the skin better. If you applied the oil first, the cream wouldn't be able to penetrate the skin properly. Treat your skin to a deep cleanse every week by applying a mask. A clay mask, for example with Bentonite Clay or Red Clay, deeply cleanses the pores and helps reduce blemishes.
Apply the mask after your toner. Leave it on for about 10-15 minutes, but never let it dry completely hard, as that can actually dry out your skin! Rinse off with lukewarm water, remove the last traces with your toner and continue your routine with steps 4 and 5.
