Description

What is MCT Oil?

MCT oil, also known as fractionated coconut oil, is a clear, odourless oil derived from coconuts. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride: triglycerides with a medium-length fatty acid chain. The oil consists almost exclusively of caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10), the two medium-chain fatty acids from coconut oil that are quickly absorbed by skin and hair.

The oil is remarkably stable, barely oxidises and always remains liquid, even in the fridge.

How is MCT Oil made?

MCT oil is produced by fractionating coconut oil. In this process, the coconut oil is first melted and then slowly cooled. Different fatty acids solidify at different temperatures, so the long-chain fatty acids (such as lauric acid and myristic acid) solidify first and can be separated from the medium-chain fatty acids. What remains is a clear, odourless oil made up almost exclusively of caprylic acid and capric acid.

What is the difference between MCT Oil and Coconut Oil?

MCT oil and coconut oil share the same origin but behave very differently. Coconut oil contains both medium-chain and long-chain fatty acids, including lauric acid. As a result, coconut oil is solid at room temperature, feels rich and has a distinctive coconut scent. MCT oil consists only of the medium-chain fatty acids and is therefore always liquid, colourless and completely odourless.

For cosmetics, this means MCT oil is a lighter, more neutral base oil than coconut oil. It is ideal when working with essential oils, as it does not overpower their scent, and it is considerably less heavy on the skin.

Benefits of MCT Oil for your skin

Light texture, does not feel greasy
MCT oil absorbs quickly and leaves no oily film behind. This makes it suitable for virtually every skin type, including combination skin.

Stable and long-lasting
Due to its composition, MCT oil barely oxidises and has a remarkably long shelf life. It is also convenient to add to other, more sensitive oils.

Supports well-hydrated skin
The high content of capric and caprylic acid supports the skin and helps prevent moisture loss.

How do you use MCT Oil?

For your skin, apply a few drops of MCT oil to cleansed, slightly damp skin. To remove make-up, apply a little oil to a cotton pad and wipe gently. For your hair, massage a few drops into the lengths and ends, or use MCT oil as a detangler for knots.

MCT oil is also a great base for DIY products such as roll-ons, face serums, scrubs and hair masks. Thanks to its neutral scent and light texture, the scent and effect of added essential oils or active ingredients are kept optimally intact.

Tips for using MCT Oil

  • MCT oil always remains liquid, even in the fridge. Very handy for roll-ons and other DIY products.
  • Thanks to its neutral scent and colour, MCT oil is ideal as a base oil for essential oils, perfumes and aromatic products.
  • MCT oil blends excellently with more intensive oils to lighten their texture and extend their shelf life.
