What is MCT Oil?

MCT oil, also known as fractionated coconut oil, is a clear, odorless oil derived from coconuts. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride: triglycerides with a medium-length fatty acid chain. The oil consists almost exclusively of caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10), the two medium-chain fatty acids from coconut oil that are quickly absorbed by skin and hair.

Our MCT oil is food grade, which means it meets the strict purity requirements for food products. The oil is remarkably stable, hardly oxidizes and always remains liquid, even in the refrigerator.

How is MCT Oil made?

MCT oil is created through fractionation of coconut oil. In this process, the coconut oil is first melted and then slowly cooled. Different fatty acids solidify at different temperatures, allowing the long-chain fatty acids (such as lauric acid and myristic acid) to solidify first and be separated from the medium-chain fatty acids. What remains is a clear, odorless oil consisting almost exclusively of caprylic acid and capric acid.

What is the difference between MCT Oil and Coconut Oil?

MCT oil and coconut oil have the same origin, but behave very differently. Coconut oil contains both medium-chain and long-chain fatty acids, including lauric acid. Therefore, coconut oil is solid at room temperature, feels rich and has a typical coconut scent. MCT oil consists only of the medium-chain fatty acids and is therefore always liquid, colorless and completely odorless.

For cosmetics, this means that MCT oil is a lighter, more neutral carrier oil than coconut oil. It is ideal when working with essential oils, as it doesn't overpower their scent, and it is much less heavy for the skin.

How do you use MCT Oil?

For your skin, apply a few drops of MCT oil to cleansed, slightly damp skin. For makeup removal, apply some oil to a cotton pad and gently wipe away. For your hair, massage a few drops into the lengths and ends or use MCT oil as a detangler for knots.

MCT oil is also a great base for DIY products like roll-ons, face serums, scrubs and hair masks. Due to its neutral scent and light texture, the scent and effectiveness of added essential oils or active ingredients remain optimally preserved.
