Instructions

1

Get all your materials and ingredients ready. Make sure everything is clean.

2

Set a pan with a thin layer of water (approx. 1 cm) over medium heat. This will be your bain-marie.

3

Weigh out your ingredients. Put the water (Phase A) into a heat-resistant glass. Put the oil ingredients (Phase C: glyceryl caprylate/caprate, Olivem 1000, cetyl alcohol) together in a second heat-resistant glass.

4

Mix the glycerine and xanthan gum (Phase B) well together in a separate dish, until the gum is fully dissolved. Set this aside.

5

Place both glasses (Phase A and C) in the pan of water. Heat until everything in Phase C is fully melted.

6
When Phase C (glyceryl caprylate/caprate, Olivem 1000 and cetyl alcohol) is fully melted, measure the temperature.
7

Now measure the temperature of both glasses. They should be between 70–75°C, and not differ by more than 5°C from each other.

8

Remove both glasses from the water bath as soon as they are at temperature.

9

Pour the water (Phase A) into a mixing beaker. Then add Phase B and C.

10

Use a stick blender and mix briefly in pulses of 5–10 seconds. As soon as the mixture turns cloudy, you know the emulsion has formed.

11

Stir calmly with a spatula as the mixture cools down.

12

As soon as the mixture has cooled to below 40°C, add Phase D: vitamin E, preservative and optionally essential oil.

13

Stir well again until everything is absorbed and let it cool further to room temperature.

14

Check the pH; it should be between 5.0 and 5.5. This pH is not only the most pleasant for your skin, but also ensures that the preservative can do its work optimally.

Use a 10% solution (in demineralised water) of citric acid to lower the pH or a 10% solution of baking soda (in demineralised water) to raise it.

Always add a maximum of 1 drop at a time , stir well and wait at least 1 minute before measuring again. The pH does not react immediately, so take your time to check before adding another drop.

For 100 g of serum, 1 drop changes the pH on average by about 0.1–0.15 pH points. Work carefully and avoid over-adjusting.

15

Pour the cream into a pump bottle or jar, stick your label on it and you are done!
