Baby Bum Balm

A gentle, natural barrier balm for red bottoms and other sensitive spots. Beeswax and cocoa butter form a breathable protective layer, shea and olive oil nourish and soften, and zinc oxide helps the skin to calm down. Mild enough for a tender baby's bottom, but also lovely for yourself in case of chapping or irritated spots. A jar that belongs in every nappy bag.

Lay out all your tools and sanitise everything well. A clean work surface is extra important for a product that goes on baby skin.

Weigh out all the ingredients carefully and divide them per phase over separate beakers. Important for this balm: mix the Zinc Oxide from Phase C in advance with a small part of the Olive Oil from Phase B into a smooth paste. This way you prevent lumps in your end product.

Put a pan of water on for your au bain-marie, or get out your hotplate.

Melt Phase A, the Beeswax, Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter, gently together in a beaker over the water bath until everything is completely liquid. Beeswax melts the slowest, so give it time.

Once Phase A is liquid, remove the beaker from the heat and stir in the rest of Phase B, the Olive Oil and Castor Oil.

Now add your prepared zinc oxide paste from Phase C and stir vigorously, until no more lumps are visible and the balm has an even, creamy colour.

Let the mixture cool to about 50 degrees; it will then start to turn slightly cloudy. Now add Phase D, the Vitamin E Oil, and stir gently once more.

Carefully pour the balm into your tins or jars while it is still liquid. Let it set completely at room temperature, preferably for an hour in a cool place. Label your creation and give it a night's rest before you start using it, so the structure has time to fully cure.

Usage
