What is the best way to care for your skin? The internet is full of information on this! And what is good for one skin is less good for another. Here are 8 skincare myths debunked.
Who ever came up with this?! Age is not a skin type. Someone of 60 can experience the same skin problems as someone of 30. Impure skin does not stop once you have reached a certain age, and dry skin does not appear just because you have turned 40. So always look at what your skin needs.
Hypoallergenic means that there is a low chance of an allergic reaction. There is no legal definition of which ingredients a product may or may not contain in order to be hypoallergenic! Hypoallergenic therefore says little about how mild a product is for the skin.
Natural cosmetics are trendy, because let's be honest: 100% natural does sound good, doesn't it?! You see it on many packages, often with lovely pictures of green trees. ‘That must be good!’ The term natural means nothing, always check the ingredient list carefully.
Vegan products do not have to be natural or plant-based. Many synthetic ingredients, for example, are also vegan.
Don't be distracted by a lovely package with all sorts of nice claims!
Not everything that is natural is by definition harmless to the skin. Essential oils, for example, are very natural, but you cannot use them pure on the skin. Always dilute Essential oil with a carrier oil.
Dosage per body area:
Face - maximum 1%
Under the eyes - maximum 0.1%
Lips - maximum 0.5%
Body - maximum 2%
An adjusted dosage applies to a number of oils. See the PDF maximum dosages below. Some components (such as linalool) in Essential oil have an allergenic effect and can therefore cause a skin reaction.
For your skin, it makes no difference whether it is a day or night cream. It is, however, nice to apply products during the day that protect the skin more against weather conditions and pollution. In addition, you cannot use certain essential oils in your daytime care because they can react to sunlight (phototoxic). Exfoliating ingredients, such as Glycolic Acid, can also make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. So you need to be careful with this.
Why do we have a recipe for night cream on our website then? It is a bit fuller in texture than the day cream, but you can of course also simply use it during the day! :)
When you care for your skin with oils, alternate between different oils and thereby ensure optimal care! Sometimes we advise using an oil in the evening, such as Rosehip Oil. This is because Rosehip Oil has an orange-red colour that (temporarily) makes the skin orange. Of course, you can also simply mix this oil with a base oil to prevent this.
There are quite a few factors that influence the price of a cream, and that is by no means only whether a cream contains good ingredients. Marketing and brand name naturally play a big role, for example. Whether a product is cheap or expensive, ultimately it is about the ingredients that are in the product. Many expensive brands act as if there are miracle ingredients in their product, but ultimately they often have one or more basic ingredients that are simply much cheaper!
You can also look at the position of the ingredient on the ingredient list. If a product contains a high percentage of a particular ingredient, it appears at the top of the ingredient list. If it is at the bottom, you can assume that there is very little of it in the product (for some ingredients this is of course not a problem and you only need a very low percentage for it to be effective).
Dry and dehydrated skin can both flake, but dry skin mainly lacks sebum/fats, while dehydrated skin mainly lacks moisture. Even oily skin can be dehydrated. Dehydrated skin is often temporary. Hydration is important for both skin conditions!
Unfortunately, the perfect diet for healthy skin does not exist, but nutrition is super important for keeping the skin healthy. Eat a varied diet and make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals! If you want to look good, you will have to eat well :). Also don't forget to hydrate properly, so drink enough water!
Men can perfectly well use products that don't say FOR MEN, because most skincare is in fact unisex. Even though men's skin is built up a little differently, cleansing and hydrating remain important! Did you know that products for men often contain more irritating substances? Many aftershave products contain alcohol, menthol or fragrance so that the product feels 'fresh' on the skin. This can irritate and dry out the skin. And you don't want that, certainly not after shaving! Witch Hazel and Shea butter, for example, work well as an aftershave balm.
Don't be distracted by a product's packaging and always stay aware of what you put on your skin. The ingredients ultimately say the most about whether something is suitable for your skin or not!
