  2. Van Hoofd naar Hart, mijn gids met krachtige selfcare rituelen.

From Head to Heart

My guide to powerful self-care rituals.

Self-care is a powerful way to come down from your head and land again in your heart and body. To feel, to breathe and to recharge. And the lovely thing is: it doesn't have to be grand or elaborate. The most powerful rituals are often found in the simplest things, in the pure power of nature.

Dear you,

Self-care. It's one of those words you come across everywhere, isn't it? Sometimes it almost feels like an extra task on your to-do list: 'oh yes, I still need to do some self-care too'. But for me it's nothing of the sort. Honestly, it's my anchor. Especially in a life with two little ones and my own business, those small, mindful moments for myself aren't a luxury, but the absolute foundation.

It's my way of coming down from my head (where the endless lists live) and landing again in my heart and my body. To feel, to breathe and to recharge. And the lovely thing is: it doesn't have to be grand or elaborate. The most powerful rituals are often found in the simplest things, in the pure power of nature.

As an 'ingredient nerd', I love knowing why something works. That's why here I share not only my favourite rituals, but also the magic behind them. See it as a loving guide to creating your own moments of calm and energy.

Morning rituals

There's something magical about the morning. It's a clean slate, a moment of sacred stillness before the world awakens. How you fill this precious first hour of your day sets the tone for everything that follows. Do you spring straight out of bed and into 'doing mode', reacting to your phone and the rush of the day? Or do you take a few mindful minutes to first land in your own body, to begin the day from intention and gentleness?

I firmly believe in the latter. Even if you only have ten or fifteen minutes, these rituals can make a world of difference. They aren't tasks, but loving invitations to yourself to start the day from a place of care and connection.

1. A fresh start: Oil pulling

Before you eat or drink anything, this is an ancient Ayurvedic tradition for cleansing your mouth and gently helping your body to detox. It might sound a little strange, but it's surprisingly pleasant once you get used to it.

The ritual
Take a tablespoon of Coconut Oil in your mouth. Without swallowing it, gently swish and 'pull' the oil through your mouth and between your teeth for about 5 to 15 minutes. To begin with, 5 minutes is perfectly fine. While you do this, you can calmly make your tea or get ready for the day. Afterwards, spit the oil out into the bin (not the sink, as it can solidify!).

The magic
This tradition is a gentle yet powerful way to cleanse your mouth and help your body detox after the night. The oil literally 'draws out' bacteria and waste that have gathered in your mouth during the night. It's wonderful for the health of your gums, helps with fresh breath and is a gentle, daily detox that supports your whole system. It feels like a clean slate for the day.

2. Brushing your body awake: Dry brushing

After you've cleansed your mouth and before you step into the shower, there's this powerful ritual that awakens your whole system in just a few minutes.

The ritual
Take a Bamboo Brush or dry brush with natural bristles. Start at your feet and make long, gentle, sweeping movements upwards towards your heart. Brush your legs, your arms (from hands to shoulders), your back and your belly in a circular, clockwise motion. Be gentle with your skin; the focus is on stimulating, not scrubbing. The whole ritual takes only three to five minutes.

The magic
This powerful ritual is like a cup of coffee for your skin and your energy levels. It's wonderful for your lymphatic system, helping to flush out waste efficiently. It removes dead skin cells better than any scrub, stimulates circulation (hello, natural glow!) and it feels as though you're literally brushing away the sleepiness and stagnation. It's a wonderful, invigorating start.

3. A gentle start for your skin

After brushing and showering, your skin is perfectly prepared to absorb moisture and nourishment. This is the moment to thank your skin with pure, loving oils.

Ritual for your face
Spray a generous mist of Rose Water (Hydrosol) over your face, neck and décolletage. While your skin is still damp, massage in a few drops of a nourishing facial oil. My favourite is Jojoba Oil, mixed with a drop of soothing Chamomile essential oil for the ultimate softness.

Ritual for your body
Your body deserves just as much love. Smooth a rich body oil onto your still-damp skin. A beautiful combination is the nourishing Sweet Almond Oil with a few drops of the warm, grounding Rosewood essential oil.

The magic
This is the moment to thank your skin after cleansing. A hydrosol such as rose water balances your skin's pH and provides a first layer of hydration. By applying your oil to damp skin, you seal in that moisture for deep, long-lasting hydration, a simple trick with a great effect. The touch itself is healing; it calms your nervous system and begins your day with an act of pure self-love.

Knowledge Block: Aromatherapy for joy & energy

These oils are like liquid sunshine. They activate your senses in a gentle way and give a positive, uplifting boost to your day, without overstimulating your nervous system.

  • Sweet Orange (Citrus Sinensis)
The scent of orange is pure joy. The oil is brimming with limonene, a component known for its uplifting and stress-reducing properties. Research suggests that inhaling limonene can influence serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, contributing to a sense of well-being. A few drops in your diffuser in the morning can give your mood an immediate lift.

  • Peppermint (Mentha Piperita
Peppermint is a direct, refreshing 'wake-up' scent. The magic lies in menthol. When you inhale it, it activates the cold receptors in your nose and airways. This sends a signal of clarity and alertness to your brain. Studies have shown that the scent of peppermint can improve cognitive performance and alertness. Perfect for that afternoon dip.

  • Rosewood (Dalbergia Sissoo Wood
This is such a beautiful, balancing oil. Rosewood, like lavender, is rich in linalool and is therefore calming. At the same time, its soft, woody and lightly floral scent has an uplifting and stabilising effect. In aromatherapy it is often used to ease feelings of low spirits and to open the heart. It isn't a sharp energy boost, but a gentle, supportive force.

Evening rituals

The evening is sacred. It is the transition from the active, outward-facing energy of the day (the 'yang') to the soft, inward-turning energy of the night (the 'yin'). Before I begin my rituals, I often burn a stick of Palo Santo (Holy Wood) to literally cleanse the energy of the day and create a calm, sacred atmosphere in the home.

This is the moment to let go of the day's stimuli, calm your nervous system and prepare your body and mind for a deep, restorative sleep. Warmth and oil are your best friends here; they nourish, ground and create a sense of comfort. Think of it as lovingly tucking yourself in for the night.

1. Washing the day away: An oil-cleansing ritual

Cleansing your face can be a rushed act, or a deeply meditative moment. For me, oil cleansing is the latter.

The ritual
Warm a pump of cleansing oil (such as the liquid gold Jojoba Oil or Sweet Almond Oil) between your palms. Gently massage the oil into your dry face. Wet a flannel with warm water, wring it out and lay it over your face for a moment. The steam opens your pores. Then gently wipe the oil (and the day) from your face.

The magic
Oil dissolves oil, so it's the most effective way to remove dirt and make-up without disturbing your skin's natural protective barrier. The combination of massage, warmth and steam stimulates circulation, calms the skin and feels like a mini spa treatment that prepares you for the night.

2. Lovingly massaging yourself: An Abhyanga ritual

This is perhaps the most nourishing and grounding ritual I know. Abhyanga, or self-massage with warm oil, is a pillar of Ayurveda. It is an act of deep self-love.

The ritual
Choose a rich, healing oil such as Calendula Oil. For an extra deeply relaxing effect, you can add a few drops of Lavender essential oil to it. Warm the oil gently by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water. Sit comfortably and begin massaging the oil onto your body, again towards the heart. Use long, flowing movements on your limbs and circular movements on your joints and belly. Take your time, breathe deeply and be present with every touch. Let the oil absorb for at least 15 minutes before you take a warm shower or bath, if you wish.

The magic
This is so much more than hydrating. The warmth of the oil deeply calms your nervous system, improves sleep, nourishes the tissues and creates a protective, loving layer around you. It helps you get out of your head and land deeply in your body. It is the ultimate act of care for your whole being.

3. A grounding foot bath

Don't always have the time or inclination for a full bath? A warm foot bath is a surprisingly powerful and grounding alternative. In Ayurveda it is said that the feet are connected to your whole body.

The ritual
Fill a basin with warm water and add a generous handful of Epsom Salt. Add a few drops of soothing Lavender essential oil and, if you like, some dried Chamomile Flowers. Let your feet soak for 15 minutes. Dry them and massage them with a rich balm, such as the All Purpose Balm.

The magic
Your feet are full of nerve endings and carry you all day long. A warm foot bath with magnesium-rich Epsom salt helps not only your feet, but your whole body to relax deeply. It draws the energy down from your head, which helps you to ground.

Knowledge Block: Aromatherapy for calm & surrender

These plants and oils are like a warm blanket for your nervous system. They help you to land in your body and activate the rest-and-restore mode.

  • Chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita)

Chamomile is pure gentleness. The magic lies in active components such as chamazulene and bisabolol, powerful anti-inflammatories that calm red, irritated skin. But the real superpower lies in apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in your brain, giving a deep sense of calm. This has been scientifically demonstrated in various studies into the anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects of chamomile. That's why a cup of chamomile tea or a warm compress with Chamomile Water or a serum with Chamomile Essential Oil is such a blessing. It is the ultimate 'everything-will-be-alright' plant.

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender is probably the most studied plant when it comes to relaxation. Its scent is rich in linalool and linalyl acetate. Countless studies have shown that inhaling these components has a calming effect on the central nervous system, which can help lower the heart rate, blood pressure and the stress hormone cortisol. It is the perfect ally in your diffuser, bath or massage oil to prepare you for a deep sleep.

  • Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

My go-to for grounding and meditation. Its scent is rich in sesquiterpenes, complex molecules that can cross the blood-brain barrier. They are believed to influence the limbic system (your emotional brain), helping to slow the stream of thoughts and connect you more deeply with yourself. It's no wonder this resin has been used in temples and ceremonies for thousands of years.

I hope these rituals inspire you to create your own sacred little moments of care too. It isn't about perfectly ticking off a self-care list, but about creating small bubbles of calm in your day. Loving moments in which you consciously step out of your head and land again in your heart and your body.

For me, nature is the greatest teacher in this. In the simplicity of a warm oil, the scent of a flower or the stillness of a cup of tea, I find the way back to myself. It is a gentle reminder that the most powerful wisdom often lies not in complicated solutions, but in the pure, earthy magic around us.

So don't see these rituals as something you have to do, but as something you get to do. For yourself, full stop!

Choose what feels good, play, experiment and find your own flow. Your intuition knows exactly what you need.

And don't forget: it isn't about perfection, but about intention, even if it's only five minutes.

Love, Malou
