Bentonite clay, perfect for oily skin

An oily skin, something many people will find very familiar. It can be quite annoying… you quickly suffer from a shiny complexion and throughout the day a greasy layer forms on the skin. Do you have oily skin and do you enjoy doing a face mask every now and then? A face mask with Bentonite clay is then a good choice for you. Why? In this blog you will read all about it.

Do you have oily skin?

Oily skin occurs as a result of increased sebum production. For some people it is very clear that they have oily skin. Throughout the day a shiny, greasy layer forms on the skin. This can also be limited to the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), as with combination skin.

Sebum keeps our skin oily and lays a protective layer over the skin so that the skin is protected. With oily skin, the production of sebum is not in balance with the natural loss. Instead of protecting, the skin lets bacteria and other micro-organisms through more easily, which ultimately leads to spots and impurities forming more quickly.

How can you recognise oily skin?

  • Shiny, oily skin

  • Often visible and enlarged pores

  • Often visible spots

  • Make-up disappears more quickly

Is your skin dry in the morning, perhaps even irritated, and does a greasy layer only form later in the day? It may be that your products are too drying, causing you to produce more sebum, and that oily skin is not your skin type.

Bentonite clay on the skin

Natural, pure and simple... there is a good reason why the use of clay for medicinal and cosmetic purposes is as old as humanity itself. But what is Bentonite clay and what does it do for the skin?

Bentonite clay (also known as Montmorillonite) is one of the most effective and healing types of clay. It is composed of volcanic ash and is cream in colour. It is mainly known for its great capacity to absorb excess oil and sebum, which thoroughly purifies the skin.

When it comes into contact with water, the minerals in the clay take on a negative charge, which binds dirt, toxic substances such as heavy metals* and oil to it. On the skin, Bentonite works like a kind of magnet that absorbs sebum and impurities. Besides this unique property, Bentonite clay contains an enormous amount of minerals. This gives Bentonite clay a dual action: it draws harmful substances out of the skin and nourishes the skin with important minerals.

Because Bentonite can bind sebum to it, this clay is mainly suitable for oilier skin with an excess of sebum. Thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, bentonite clay can also be used for acne complaints such as spots and impurities.

*So do not use metal mixing bowls. This will considerably reduce the effectiveness of the clay.

Using Bentonite clay

Bentonite clay can be used as a face mask, scrub or in a DIY skincare product. A face mask is the most effective. Do you have a lot of impurities on your back or chest? You can also add 4 tablespoons of clay powder to the bathwater to thoroughly cleanse the skin.

Face mask

Mix the Bentonite clay with water and then apply a thick layer of the mixture to your face, leaving it to dry for about 15-20 minutes. Remove the face mask before it has dried completely. If you let the mask dry out completely, your skin may feel tight afterwards. When removing the mask, use plenty of water and, if you like, care for your skin afterwards with a fine oil.

Tip: you can also mix the Bentonite clay with a plant-based oil. When you use a plant-based oil, the mask will not harden.

The result? Radiant and fresh skin… Have you ever tried the mask? Or would you like to give it a go? Let us know!
