Description
What is Carrot Seed Essential Oil?
Carrot Seed Essential Oil has a warm, woody and lightly sweet, earthy scent. The Latin name is Daucus carota, also known as wild carrot or Queen Anne's lace. The oil is steam distilled from the small, dried seeds of the wild carrot plant. Unlike the familiar orange kitchen carrot, the wild carrot is white, tough and inedible. The plant originally grows around the Mediterranean Sea, but is now also found in Western Europe. Our carrot seed oil is made in France.
Carrot seed belongs to the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae), along with fennel, anise and coriander seed among others. The oil is especially valued in pro-age skincare and blends beautifully with woody oils like cedarwood and sandalwood, with floral oils like geranium, and with citrus oils like May Chang.
How is Carrot Seed Essential Oil made?
Carrot seed is obtained through steam distillation of the dried seeds. In this process, the plant material is treated with hot water steam, which releases the volatile aroma molecules. These are captured and condensed into essential oil.
Important to know: steam distillation only carries volatile molecules. The main component of carrot seed oil is carotol, a sesquiterpenol that is responsible for the characteristic aroma and the valued effect on the skin. Non-volatile substances like vitamin A (retinol) and beta-carotene remain behind in the plant material and therefore do not come along in the essential oil. You can find these in cold-pressed carrot seed oil, a carrier oil that is obtained in a different way.
Benefits of Carrot Seed Essential Oil
Beloved in pro-age skincare
Carrot seed oil has been valued for mature skin for generations. The effect comes from the high content of carotol and other sesquiterpenes, not from vitamins. These substances are associated with a nourishing, soothing effect on the skin.
Rich in antioxidants
The oil naturally contains antioxidant-acting components that help protect the skin against external influences.
Deeply relaxing in massage oil
Processed in a carrier oil, carrot seed works wonderfully as part of a relaxing massage oil for tired or tense muscles.
Warm, earthy scent
The woody, lightly sweet aroma works clarifying and uplifting in the diffuser and adds depth to aroma blends.
Economical in use
Carrot seed is a concentrated oil. A small amount is sufficient, making a bottle last long.
How do you use Carrot Seed Essential Oil?
Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on the skin. For homemade care products we advise a working dosage of 1 to 2 percent (1 to 2 grams per 100 grams of product). Read the explanation at the bottom for more information. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter.
In a pro-age facial oil
Add 1 to 2 percent carrot seed to a carrier oil like jojoba or rosehip oil for a nourishing oil for mature skin.
In a relaxing massage oil
Process carrot seed in a base massage oil for a warm, earthy oil that is wonderful for tense muscles.
In a diffuser
Put a few drops in an aroma diffuser for a woody, clarifying atmosphere. Combine with cedarwood or a citrus oil for more balance.
Through your shampoo
Mix a few drops through a neutral shampoo for a pleasant scent and a nourished feeling on the scalp.
Tips when using Carrot Seed Essential Oil
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place and always close the bottle tightly after use.
- Test first on a small piece of skin before using the oil for the first time.
- Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.
- Dose consciously: carrot seed is concentrated and a little goes a long way.
What is so special about it?
Carrot seed oil is one of the more underestimated essential oils. The characteristic effect comes entirely from the sesquiterpenes, with carotol as the main component, which are resistant to the distillation process. This makes it an honest, plant-based alternative for those looking for an earthy, nourishing oil for mature skin, without misleading vitamin claims.
Points of attention and side effects
Always use carrot seed oil diluted, never pure on the skin. For homemade care products we advise a working dosage of 1 to 2 percent. When combining multiple essential oils in one recipe, take into account allergen stacking and stay within legal limits.
For products that you rinse off, like soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin always test first on a small spot and wait 24 hours before using on larger areas.
