What is Preservative DS 1388 Eco (Dermosoft)?
If you want to make a finished product that consists of 100% aqueous ingredients, we recommend using this preservative.
Preservative Eco 1388, also known as Dermosoft, protects your homemade cosmetics against fungi and bacteria. This is sufficient for formulas that consist of 100% water-containing ingredients, i.e., no oils. Water-containing serums with gums also fall into this category.
Preservative Eco 1388 does not protect against yeasts, for which Preservative Eco is a better choice.

Approved preservative
Preservative 1388 Eco is one of the few preservatives approved by Ecocert and Cosmos and is therefore used worldwide in natural cosmetics and skincare products. Preservative Eco is free from palm oil, phenoxyethanol, parabens, formaldehyde and isothiazolone.
100% fragrance-free
Preservative 1388 Eco is 100% fragrance-free and therefore perfect for aqueous formulas without perfume.
Add during the cooling phase
It is recommended to add Preservative 1388 Eco during the cooling phase of your formulation.
Effective at a low pH level
Preservative Eco is effective at a pH value of 5 to 5.5, which gives you slightly less flexibility with the rest of your ingredients. Make sure you test the pH accurately before adding Preservative 1388 Eco. After you have added it, check the pH again. Verify that it is between 5 and 5.5. For formulas used on the skin (with the exception of exfoliants), a pH between 5 and 6 is ideal.
Protects against fungi and bacteria
This preservative protects against fungi and bacteria. This is sufficient for water-containing recipes. This preservative does not protect against yeasts, for which Preservative Eco should be used.
How do you use it?
Use Preservative Eco as a preservative in your homemade cosmetics. Use it for example in: toners, micellar waters, water-containing serums and in your homemade body and face mist.
Dosage: The recommended dosage is 2% to 4% of the total weight of your finished product. Add Preservative 1388 Eco during the cooling phase of your formula.
Preservative 1388 Eco consists of Glycerin, Water, Sodium Levulinate and Sodium Anisate.
How long is my recipe shelf stable?
Provided that you work in a clean environment with disinfected tools and add the preservative during the cooling phase at the correct pH, your recipe has a shelf life of at least 6 months.
