Description

What is Melissa Hydrosol?

Melissa Hydrosol, also called Lemon Balm Hydrosol, is the aromatic water that remains after steam distillation of Melissa. The scent is fresh and lemony and calming, a natural perfume from the plant.

Melissa (Melissa officinalis) is an herb from the mint family. The name "melissa" comes from the Greek word for honeybee. Beekeepers have traditionally planted melissa flowers around their beehives to attract honeybees and keep them well fed.

Our Melissa Hydrosol is organically certified by Ecocert COSMOS, obtained from fresh flowers via steam distillation. It is a fine hydrosol for sensitive skin and for a calming atmosphere.

How is Melissa Hydrosol made?

The fresh flowers of the melissa plant are processed via steam distillation. The steam carries the volatile aromatic compounds and condenses into a liquid. The essential oil floats on top, below remains the aromatic water, which is the hydrosol.

Melissa is a plant where the essential oil is very scarce and precious. Therefore the hydrosol is a beautiful alternative to utilize the properties of melissa in an accessible way.

Our hydrosol is preserved with Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (Leucidal), a natural fermentation ingredient derived from fermented radish roots. This is an Ecocert-approved natural preservative that extends the shelf life of the hydrosol without synthetic additives.

Benefits of Melissa Hydrosol

Caring for sensitive skin
Melissa Hydrosol brings calm to red or sensitive skin and provides a soothing, hydrating feeling. Suitable for normal, sensitive and combination skin.

Calming for mind and atmosphere
The fresh, lemony scent calms and relaxes without being overwhelming. A fine choice to bring the mind to rest at the end of the day.

A natural perfume
The clear, lemony scent is by itself a fine aroma to spray through the house, on bedding or on the body.

Versatile in DIY
The hydrosol is a beautiful water phase for homemade toners, facial sprays, room sprays and body mists.

How do you use Melissa Hydrosol?

As toner for sensitive skin
Spray on a cotton pad or Face Wipe and gently apply to cleansed skin. Beautiful to combine with Rose Water for extra soothing.

As facial spray
Spray directly on the face for a refreshing and calming moment during the day.

As room spray
Spray through the bedroom or living space for a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful to combine with Lavender Water for deeper relaxation.

Cooling body mist
Combine 60 grams Melissa Hydrosol with 15 grams Lavender Water and 15 grams Orange Blossom Water in a spray bottle. Spray yourself for cooling on a hot summer day.

In DIY skincare
Use as water phase in homemade toners, face masks and light serums. The hydrosol can work as a replacement for demineralized water in recipes for sensitive skin.

What is so special about Melissa?

Melissa has been valued by herbalists and beekeepers since antiquity. The Greek physician Dioscorides already described the plant in his work from the 1st century AD. The Arab physician Avicenna referred to melissa as a plant that makes the heart joyful. In the Middle Ages, melissa was included in countless monastery herb gardens, among others as main ingredient in Eau de Mélisse des Carmes, a famous French tincture of the Carmelites from the 17th century.

The name "Melissa" comes from the Greek word for honeybee. The plant attracts bees in large numbers, and beekeepers planted the flowers around the beehives to keep the bees healthy and fed.

Tips when using Melissa Hydrosol

  • Store the hydrosol in the refrigerator after opening. This extends freshness and gives an extra cooling feeling when using.
  • Always close the bottle tightly after use.
  • The hydrosol has a natural scent that can differ per harvest. This is a sign of a natural product.
  • Test first on a small piece of skin before using the hydrosol for the first time, especially with sensitive skin.

Points of attention

Melissa Hydrosol naturally contains components such as citral, geraniol and linalool, which may cause an allergic reaction for some people. With sensitive skin, first test on a small spot.

Melissa Hydrosol is intended for external use. Not for consumption. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
