Description
What is Sweet Almond Oil?
Sweet almond oil is pressed from the sweet almond (Prunus amygdalus dulcis), the edible almond that we also know in the kitchen. The almond tree originally comes from the western part of Central Asia and was spread by the Romans throughout the entire Mediterranean region via Egypt and Greece. The skin-supporting properties were already known then.
Important to know: for cosmetic use, always the sweet variety is needed. Bitter almond oil naturally contains amygdalin, a substance that can be converted to cyanide in the body. Our oil is made from exclusively sweet almonds and is completely safe to use.
How is Sweet Almond Oil made?
The almonds are harvested from the almond tree, shelled and cold-pressed. With cold-pressed oil, no heat above 30 degrees is used during pressing, which preserves the natural vitamins, fatty acids and light almond aroma. Afterwards, the oil is filtered and ready for use.
Why is Sweet Almond Oil so special?
Sweet almond oil has a mild, nourishing character that makes it one of the most versatile carrier oils. The oil consists of approximately 62 to 86% oleic acid (omega 9) and 20 to 30% linoleic acid (omega 6). Additionally, it naturally contains alpha-tocopherol, the active form of vitamin E. This composition makes sweet almond oil suitable for virtually every skin type, and especially lovely for dry or sensitive skin.
Benefits of Sweet Almond Oil for your skin
Nourishes and softens
Due to the high oleic acid content, the skin feels soft, supple and hydrated after use. A real blessing for dry skin.
Mild for sensitive skin
Sweet almond oil is known for its gentle character and is often used for sensitive skin, as long as there's no nut allergy.
Great as make-up remover
Due to its mildness, the oil is suitable for removing make-up around the eyes, including waterproof varieties.
Benefits of Sweet Almond Oil for your hair
Gives shine and softness
Sweet almond oil makes dry and dull hair softer and gives a natural shine.
Cares for the scalp
The mild, nourishing effect is also lovely for a dry or itchy scalp.
How do you use Sweet Almond Oil?
For the body, apply a thin layer of oil to still damp skin after showering. For your face, massage a few drops into cleansed skin. For make-up removal, apply some oil to a cotton pad and gently wipe off. For your hair, massage a little oil into damp hair, let it absorb for 15 minutes and wash it out with your regular shampoo. The oil is also lovely as a base for massage, possibly with a few drops of essential oil.
Tips when using Sweet Almond Oil
- For baby skin, preferably don't use pure. The skin of newborns and young babies is still immature, and large amounts of oleic acid can unbalance the skin barrier and actually worsen dryness or eczema. Do you still want to use sweet almond oil for baby skin? Then mix the oil with a linoleic acid-rich oil like safflower oil or grape seed oil, so the fatty acids are in better proportion.
- Do you have a nut allergy? Then be careful and first test on a small piece of skin.
- Our cold-pressed sweet almond oil has a very mild scent. The organic variant has the typical, slightly stronger almond scent.
- From 1 liter, the oil is delivered in a plastic jerrycan.
