Description
What exactly is zinc oxide?
Zinc oxide is a natural product (oxidized zinc) that is widely used in sunscreens or
day creams with a protection factor, because it naturally protects against the sun. However, most manufacturers use zinc oxide that is so finely refined (down to nano-particles) that it can enter the bloodstream through the skin, which is undesirable. Also, the zinc particles are often coated with a layer of silicone, which can be harmful in combination with sun exposure. Non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide is completely safe for use and is the ingredient used to make natural sunscreens.
Note: zinc oxide is the filter also found in professional mineral sunscreen. However, you cannot measure at home whether a homemade formula actually achieves the protection factor. Therefore, we do not provide a recipe for homemade sunscreen.
How do I use zinc oxide?
Before you start working with zinc oxide, read the following text carefully:
Zinc oxide is a fine
white powder and is safe for use, but can irritate the airways if it is inhaled. Therefore, it is advisable that if you make your own sunscreen, for example tie a t-shirt over your mouth/nose while you are working. Also important is that you do NOT mix zinc oxide with linseed oil. Linseed oil reacts with zinc oxide causing heat to develop and this can be dangerous.
