How to care for oily skin

Do you have a shiny complexion that feels greasy by the end of the day? Then you probably have oily skin. Oily skin is more prone to impurities such as spots and blackheads. In this blog you can read all about oily skin and how to care for it.

What is oily skin?

You cleanse your face in the morning, care for your skin, and after a few hours your skin is shining again. Ugh, annoying! There's a good chance you have oily skin. Oily skin produces more sebum than is needed. This sebum is not drained away and stays on the skin. As a result, the skin starts to shine. The sebum clogs the pores, causing the pores to enlarge. Dead skin cells and clogged pores thicken your skin. This means even less sebum can be drained away and blackheads and spots can develop.

But did you know that oily skin also has its advantages? The sebum protects your skin, which means fine lines and wrinkles develop less quickly. Make sure you do not dry out your face with aggressive products. Your skin will then actually produce more sebum in an attempt to restore the balance.

How do you recognise oily skin?

  • The skin shines and feels greasy

  • The pores are coarser

  • More quickly affected by impurities

  • Make-up stays in place less well

It may also be that only your forehead, nose and chin (T-zone) are oily, in which case you have a combination skin type.

How do you care for oily skin?

For oily skin it is very important that it comes back into balance. With these 5 tips you can bring your oily skin back into balance!

  1. Cleanse your skin regularly (so every day) but not too often

  2. Use a mild skin cleanser

  3. Do not use aggressive products

  4. Apply a nourishing clay mask once a week

  5. Opt for a fast-absorbing oil

Great products for oily skin

(To use pure on the skin or for mixing)

African black soap: for a deep cleanse of the skin. We recommend not using this soap daily, or at least building up its use gradually.

Jojoba oil: the composition of this oil closely resembles our skin's own sebum and regulates the skin's sebum production. Use as a cleanser or as daily care.

Squalane: This oil hydrates the skin intensely without feeling greasy afterwards, ideal for oily skin. The oil does not clog your skin but leaves it feeling soft.

Elderflower water: soothing and restorative for the skin. Lovely to use as a toner or to add to your clay mask.

Witch hazel: use this as a toner to reduce the pores and purify the skin.

Bentonite clay: supports and purifies the skin, mix with a hydrosol for more hydration.

Ghassoul clay: cleansing mask that helps with impurities

Activated charcoal powder: draws impurities out of the skin

Tea tree oil: ideal as a spot treatment (in a carrier oil). This oil has a purifying effect and for many people it helps to reduce spots.

Great ingredients for oily skin

(do not use pure on the skin)

Lavender Essential Oil: helps with spots thanks to its purifying effect. Add a maximum of 1% to a carrier oil.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil: Regulates sebum production and has a purifying effect. Add a maximum of 1% to a carrier oil or DIY creation.

Glycerine: the thirst-quencher for your skin. Glycerine draws moisture from the environment and holds on to it, thus providing good hydration. Lovely to add to your Hydrosol for a delightful hydration boost.

Hyaluronic Acid: hydrating effect and improves the skin structure.

Niacinamide: This form of vitamin B3 has very many benefits for oily skin:

  • It promotes the production of ceramides. These are fats that occur naturally in the skin. These fats are needed to support the skin barrier so that the skin retains moisture and sebum.

  • It helps to prevent spots and blackheads. Ideal for impure skin.

  • Inhibits sebum production and prevents sebum from accumulating in the pores

Willow Bark Extract: this is a plant-based form of salicylic acid. This ingredient has purifying properties and is therefore very suitable for oily skin. Willow bark contains the component salicin. This is not exactly the same as salicylic acid, but it does have equivalent properties on the skin. It is exfoliating and provides a fresh and radiant complexion.

Of course, there are many more other ingredients suitable for oily skin. We are happy to help you. If you have any questions or need advice, you can send a message to support@naturalheroes.nl
