What makes this extract so unique isn't just the scent. It's also, for example, a fantastic natural fixative in perfumes, making a scent linger longer. On top of that, it can give a subtle, physical warmth on the skin, which made it popular for centuries in winter salves. So it's a scent that not only smells wonderful, but can also be used as an active ingredient in your DIY creations.
As an 'ingredient nerd', I'm fascinated by the complex composition of this resin, but my love lies above all in its calming, grounding effect. Today I'll take you through the story behind this powerful scent.

Research confirms that Benzyl Benzoate and Cinnamate possess powerful antiseptic and anti-parasitic properties. This explains why the balsam was traditionally used for wound care and for skin conditions caused by mites and lice. So it's more than a scent; it's an active plant substance.Aromatherapy

Formulating with Peru Balsem is not for the faint of heart! I can tell you, I spent a whole week sweating before I had a few recipes. It turned out not to be at all easy to work with. I had a hundred ideas, but many of them fell flat or failed. This syrupy, dark balsam calls for good preparation. Luckily I have a few tips, so you won't have to run into the same problems. Here, theory and practice come together.
Heating it at the same time as butters or waxes
If you add the Peru Balsem directly to warm butters or waxes and heat it along with them, it takes on a grainy, crystalline texture. The syrupy components don't blend well with the fatty phase as it cools. You then get spots or grains. So don't do this! Want to add it to a balsam? Then it's best to first mix it with other essential oils before you add it.
Water-based Products
Don't try to work the balsam in on its own in emulsions such as creams or lotions. The balsam isn't water-soluble, which gives you odd grains and spots in your recipe. The scent of Peru Balsem also doesn't come into its own this way. If you do want to add it to an emulsion, mix it first with other essential oils.
Mixing with other essential oils
The key to success is to dilute the Peru Balsem first with other essential oils before adding it to the rest of your recipe. You can use a mini whisk to mix it well. The essential oils are thin and volatile and help the Peru Balsem dissolve into them a little. If you work too much Peru Balsem into your scent blend, you'll notice you get grains again. The maximum that works in a blend is around 0.4% Peru Balsem. This is also the maximum dosage for perfume balsams.
Diluting with alcohol
Peru Balsem dissolves very well in Alcohol. So if you enjoy making room sprays or an eau de parfum, Peru Balsem is extremely well suited to this. The maximum dosages in this kind of spray are also much higher (around 2.8%), so you can also create a much stronger Peru Balsem scent.

The journey of this precious balsam doesn't begin in Peru, as you might think, but in the green forests of El Salvador. It's the thick, syrupy life force of the Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae tree.
And the name? We're talking, of course, about Peru Balsem! The name 'Peru' is a charming historical mistake, a tribute to the old trade routes! Because the balsam was shipped to Europe centuries ago from the Peruvian port of Callao, the name stuck. The indigenous population, however, had known how precious this extract was for far longer.
What I find so beautiful about this extract is the way it's obtained. The balsam is literally the tree's response to a wound. Through incisions in the bark the tree 'bleeds' a thick, oily liquid. This is the tree's natural mechanism for purifying and healing itself. So we're not simply harvesting a substance; we're receiving the precious, concentrated healing power of the plant itself. That, to me, makes it even more special.
Before the balsam travelled the world, it was also often used as a sacred incense by indigenous peoples. The thick smoke was a means of purifying and protecting ceremonies. This tradition reinforces the idea that the balsam is more than a scent: it's a connection to purity and spiritual power.
Throughout history, Peru Balsem has found its way into countless applications. But its core is its scent: a deep, balsamic base note known as a fixative in perfumery. This means it 'holds' the more volatile, lighter scents and gives every blend a creamy, long-lasting, warm finish.
It's that unique, layered scent, balancing between sweet and woody, that you'll find anywhere warmth and depth are desired, from luxury fragrances to nourishing salves.
Because Peru Balsem is a powerful, pure natural product, careful use is essential. The resin is classified as a skin sensitiser and can cause an allergic skin reaction. So always test a drop of diluted oil first on a small patch of skin. For the safest result, stick to the internationally recognised recommended percentages per product category (IFRA)
For leave-on (creams, serums, oils) products, use a maximum of 0.1%.
For rinse-off (shower gel, soap, conditioner), use a maximum of 0.8%
