Description
What is Stearic Acid?
Stearic Acid is obtained from cold-pressed flax seed oil and then refined through a gentle distillation method. The fatty acid is known as a reliable ingredient that gives products more firmness, structure and softness. It is widely used in creams, lotions, body butters and hair care because it improves both texture and skin feel.
Due to its higher melting point, it contributes to firm textures that still feel soft on the skin. It works moisturizing by helping to retain moisture, making the skin feel smoother and more comfortable.
It is also valuable in hair care: it lightly coats the hair fiber, retains moisture better and gives a soft, well-cared-for shine.
What are the benefits of Stearic Acid?
Thickener for lotions and butters
Stearic Acid gives creams, lotions and butters more body and a smoother skin feel. Products therefore feel fuller and more stable without becoming heavy.
Softness and skin comfort
The fatty acid helps retain moisture and supports a supple skin barrier. This makes the skin feel smoother and calmer, even in dryness.
Supportive for hair
It lightly coats the hair and helps retain moisture longer. The hair fiber therefore feels softer and gets a subtle shine.
Non-greasy and stabilizing
Stearic Acid makes formulas firmer without leaving a greasy film. This provides a pleasant balance in rich body creams and oil blends.
How do you use Stearic Acid?
Lotions and creams: 2–5% for a softer, fuller texture
Body butters: 3–8% for more firmness
Soap formulas: 5–10% for extra hardness
Hair products: small percentages to promote shine and suppleness
Stearic Acid works best when heated to melt, so it can mix well with oils and other fat phase ingredients. Store cool, dry and airtight.
Melting and processing
Melting temperature: approximately 60–70°C
Stearic Acid must become completely liquid to be able to mix evenly with the rest of the fat phase. Insufficient melting leads to grittiness, instability or white spots in the final product.
Processing:
- Add it to the fat phase of your recipe
- Heat the fat phase above 70°C until the Stearic Acid is completely melted
- Then mix with the water phase according to your usual emulsion process
- Allow controlled cooling to let crystal formation proceed neatly (avoid cooling too quickly for a smoother result)
What makes Stearic Acid so special?
Stearic Acid is a completely plant-based, COSMOS-certified fatty acid with a very high natural purity. It is vegan, GMO-free and is well tolerated by virtually all skin types. It brings firmness, stability and softness together in one ingredient, making it a beloved base for homemade creams, lotions and hair products.
