It was the summer of 2005, in France, when I started my first French-speaking job at a campsite. With trembling knees, I walked to the reception on my first day. Along the way, I passed a large field full of lavender flowers. I picked a flower and nervously rubbed it between my hands. I inhaled the scent from my hands and closed my eyes. The overwhelming floral and herbal scent filled my nostrils and immediately brought me back to the present. Wow! With a sigh of relief, I felt calm. Our Lavender Essential Oil is obtained from the flower tops of the Bulgarian Lavender Plant. These are distilled into a beautiful essential oil of very high quality. Bulgarian lavender is known worldwide as one of the best lavender varieties. It is not only warm in Bulgaria, where Lavender thrives best, but the Bulgarian soil also contains the most nutrients for the Lavender plant. Our Lavender Essential Oil comes from the Bulgarian lavender varieties; Hemus and Sevtopolis.
The lavender fields are picked on small fields so that they receive all the attention from the farmers. The small fields may yield less, but the quality of the lavender is much better than in large fields. So the choice is not only dependent on the harvesting method. Weather conditions such as temperature and humidity affect the quality of the flower tops. Growing lavender on a small field makes it possible to harvest the lavender in a part of the day and thus ensure quality. Large lavender production areas use machines for different steps. This often leads to significant quality differences.
There are no artificial fertilizers used in the sowing and growing of lavender. Harvesting is done by hand and picked up with a tractor.
Our lavender oil is obtained by steam distillation. After harvesting, the lavender is placed in a copper still and pressed down. In another boiler, water is heated. The steam from this boiler is led through a hose into the bottom of the still with lavender. The steam captures the volatile oils and upward-moving substances and brings them to the top to the cooling stills and the steam cycle. In the cooling stills, the steam is cooled back to liquid. Then the water and lavender oil flow through a tap into a Florentine flask. The oil is then skimmed off the water, and the water is reused. The remaining water is the hydrolate. This is actually the byproduct of the steam distillation process. Lavender hydrolate is almost as special as the oil and also has many skin benefits.
