Description
What is Yuzu Essential Oil?
Yuzu Essential Oil is a unique citrus oil from Japan, with a scent that falls between lemon, mandarin and grapefruit, with its own fresh, slightly bitter undertone. The Latin name is Citrus Junos, and the oil is extracted from the peel of the yuzu fruit. The color is light yellow and the scent is intense, fresh, complex and distinctly citrus.
Yuzu is valued in Japanese wellness tradition, where the fruit has been used for centuries in baths during winter (yuzuyu) to warm the body and refresh the mind. The oil brings a piece of Japanese wellness into your daily routine.
Yuzu blends beautifully with other citrus oils like bergamot and mandarin, with woody oils like hinoki, sandalwood and cedarwood, and with floral oils like neroli and ylang ylang. It is a beloved ingredient in luxury perfumery and in uplifting blends.
How is Yuzu Essential Oil made?
Our Yuzu Essential Oil is extracted through steam distillation of the peel of the yuzu fruit. In steam distillation, the peels are exposed to steam, which releases the volatile aromatic components. This steam is then condensed, and the essential oil separates from the water.
An important advantage of steam distillation over cold pressing is that the heavier furocoumarins remain in the distillation residue. Therefore, distilled yuzu is naturally non-phototoxic, unlike many other cold-pressed citrus oils like bergamot or lemon.
Benefits of Yuzu Essential Oil
Non-phototoxic
Our distilled yuzu is safe for day care. You can wear this oil during the day without worrying about sun exposure.
Improves mood
The fresh, complex citrus scent is excellent for improving mood. Yuzu helps reduce stress and anxiety and creates a refreshing, energetic atmosphere. Ideal in the morning to start the day well.
Soothes and calms the skin
Yuzu is traditionally valued for its soothing properties on stressed or irritated skin.
Beautiful addition to skin brightening formulations
Yuzu is traditionally used in Japanese skin care aimed at an even complexion. The oil itself is not an active brightening ingredient, but fits well in formulations where this is the theme.
Authentic Japanese wellness ritual
The yuzu bath tradition during the winter solstice (toji) goes back centuries and is still celebrated in Japan. By incorporating yuzu into your daily rituals, you bring something of that rich wellness tradition into your life.
How to use Yuzu Essential Oil?
Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on skin. For homemade care products, we recommend a working dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Read the explanation at the bottom for more information. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter.
In a day or night cream
Add yuzu to your DIY face cream for a fresh, uplifting aroma and a Japanese wellness vibe. Because our yuzu is not phototoxic, you can also incorporate it into day care.
In a relaxing bath
Mix 5 drops of yuzu with a tablespoon of carrier oil or 100 grams of epsom salt, and add to your bath water for a traditional Japanese yuzuyu ritual.
In a diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in an aroma diffuser and bring a refreshing, complex citrus atmosphere into the home. Combine with cedarwood or hinoki for a Japanese-inspired blend.
In your hair care
Add yuzu to your shampoo or conditioner for a fresh scent and an uplifting morning ritual.
In a DIY perfume
Yuzu works beautifully as a unique top note in luxury perfume blends. Combine with neroli and sandalwood for a refined, oriental-inspired perfume.
What makes Yuzu Essential Oil special?
Besides the invigorating scent and versatile applications, Yuzu is special because of its rich history and cultural significance in Japan. Traditionally, Yuzu is used in baths to warm the body and refresh the mind during the winter months. The fruit is relatively rare in Western markets, which makes Yuzu oil a precious and special choice for those who love unique citrus scents.
Tips when using Yuzu Essential Oil
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Citrus oils are more sensitive to oxidation than other essential oils, and proper storage significantly extends shelf life.
- Always close the bottle tightly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its scent and effectiveness faster.
- Test on a small patch of skin first before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
- Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.
Precautions and side effects
Our Yuzu Essential Oil is extracted via steam distillation and is therefore not phototoxic. It can therefore be used without restriction for sunlight. However, it remains important to always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.
Our practical working dosage: 1 percent
For homemade care products, we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Citrus oils naturally contain allergens like limonene and linalool. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens stack up and you can quickly exceed legal allergen limits. A working dosage of 1 percent gives you room to use multiple oils in one recipe without exceeding those limits.
For rinse-off products like soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin, always test on a small spot first and wait 24 hours before using on larger surfaces.
