Description
What is Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil?
Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil is a refined, fresh oil with a scent that is fresh, green and citrusy, with a soft floral undertone. The Latin name is Citrus Aurantium var. Amara, and the oil is obtained from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree. The designation "Bigarade" refers specifically to the bitter orange (from the French "bigarade"), from which this petitgrain is derived.
The scent is clear, clean and calming, with a balanced character that both refreshes and soothes. Petitgrain Bigarade is therefore a beloved ingredient in natural perfumery, skincare and aromatherapy.
Bigarade blends beautifully with other citrus oils such as bergamot and mandarin, with floral oils such as neroli, lavender and rose geranium, and with woody oils such as sandalwood, cedarwood and patchouli. It is an excellent middle note in perfume compositions.
How is Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil made?
Petitgrain Bigarade is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree. The leaves are carefully harvested and exposed to steam, which releases the volatile aromatic components. This steam is then condensed, and the essential oil separates from the water.
Because the oil comes from the leaves and not from the peel of the fruit, it does not contain furocoumarins. Therefore, petitgrain bigarade is not phototoxic and can be used without restriction for sunlight.
Benefits of Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil
Not phototoxic
Safe for daily care, even in products worn on the skin during the day.
Soothes and softens the skin
The oil is traditionally valued for its soothing effect, fine for sensitive or stressed skin that shows redness.
Balances the skin
Suitable for combination or oilier skin types that quickly become shiny or clogged. The oil helps to balance sebum production.
Supports fresh, even skin
Petitgrain Bigarade can help to refresh dull skin and contribute to a healthy radiance.
Mildly purifying
The oil has mild antibacterial properties and can help with pimples and blemishes without working harshly or drying.
Refreshing and relaxing at the same time
The clear citrus green scent softens tension and stimulates a calm mind. A beautiful balance between uplifting and calming.
How do you use Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil?
Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on the skin. For homemade care we recommend a working dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Read the explanation below for more information. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter.
In facial care
For face products you can maintain a lower dosage, for example 0.1 to 0.5 percent, for a subtle calming effect.
In body care
In body lotions, oils and butters, 1 percent works fine.
In a DIY perfume
Bigarade works beautifully as a green citrus middle note. Combine with bergamot as a top note and sandalwood or cedarwood as a base note for a refined, modern perfume.
In a diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in an aroma diffuser. Combine with other citrus or floral notes for a calming, fresh atmosphere.
In relaxation products
Petitgrain Bigarade is excellent in body oils, massage oils, pillow sprays and evening diffuser blends. Pair with lavender for an even deeper calming effect.
What is the difference with regular Petitgrain?
Besides this Bigarade variant, we also have a regular Petitgrain in our range. Both actually come from the same plant species (the bitter orange tree), but Bigarade is a specific aroma profile from a standardized source, while the regular petitgrain is more broadly classified. The Bigarade often has a slightly more refined, cleaner aroma profile.
What makes Petitgrain Bigarade special?
Petitgrain is one of those rare oils that are both fresh and calming. The oil brings balance where the skin needs it, refreshes without irritating, and gives products a modern, green freshness that is hard to match. In natural perfumery, Petitgrain Bigarade is an indispensable middle note for those seeking a clean, contemporary signature.
Tips when using Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Good storage significantly extends shelf life.
- Always close the bottle properly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its scent and effect more quickly.
- Test first on a small piece of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
- Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.
Precautions and side effects
Petitgrain Bigarade Essential Oil is not phototoxic and can therefore be used without restriction for sunlight. However, it remains important to always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.
Our practical working dosage: 1 percent
For homemade care we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Essential oils naturally contain allergens such as limonene, linalool and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate and you can quickly exceed the legal allergen limits. A working dosage of 1 percent gives you the space to use multiple oils in one recipe without exceeding those limits. For facial care, a lower dosage of 0.1 to 0.5 percent is often sufficient.
For products that you rinse off, such as soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin, always test first on a small spot and wait 24 hours before using on larger surfaces. Not intended for internal use.
