Discover the beauty secret of Moroccan women
Ghassoul (or rhassoul) is a volcanic, pinkish to beige-colored clay that is found exclusively in the
Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The word ghassoul comes from the Arabic word 'ghassala' which means 'to wash' or 'to wash away'. The clay has been used in Morocco since the 12th century for generations as a natural hair and skin cleanser. It is used as a face mask, but also as a body mask and even as a hair mask. Covering your body with ghassoul clay is part of the hammam ritual, a traditional Arabic bath & body treatment.
Ghassoul clay is rich in the minerals silica, magnesium, potassium and iron that absorb waste products from the skin. The clay cleanses your skin gently, refines your pores and over time you will see improvement in skin texture and have clear, radiant skin with less dryness.
Ghassoul clay also makes your hair and scalp incredibly clean and removes residue from styling products. Wonderful also if you suffer from somewhat oilier hair. For thin and lifeless hair, a hair mask with ghassoul is also great for creating more volume!
How to use ghassoul clay
Put 1 tablespoon of clay in a glass or stone bowl, slowly add 3 tablespoons of water and stir (with a wooden or plastic spoon, no metal!) until a firm but spreadable mixture is formed. If it's too thick add more water, if it's too thin add more clay.
Apply the mask to your face, let it work for 10 minutes and then rinse off with water. Never let the clay dry completely, as this will dry out your skin too much! You can of course also apply the mask to the rest of your body. Simply use more clay and follow the same instructions. Afterwards enjoy wonderfully soft skin! You can use this mild clay daily.
For use in your hair, mix the clay in the same way until you have enough to massage into your hair and scalp. Let it work for 10 minutes and rinse your hair under the shower. The clay can dry out your hair somewhat; if you experience this you can also mix a small amount of the clay through your regular shampoo and wash your hair as you normally would.
Note: Ghassoul clay can damage colored hair because the hair dye can react to the minerals in Ghassoul clay.
