Description
What is Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free, Distilled)?
Lemon Essential Oil FCF-free is the steam-distilled version of lemon oil, where the furocoumarins that cause phototoxicity are not present. The fresh, vibrant aroma brings sunshine into the home, with a slightly sharper top note than the cold-pressed variant. The Latin name is Citrus Limon, and the oil is extracted from the peel of the lemon fruit through steam distillation.
FCF stands for "furocoumarin-free". During steam distillation, the heavier, non-volatile furocoumarins remain behind in the residue, making the final oil naturally free of these phototoxic molecules. Therefore, this lemon can be used without restriction in products that are worn on the skin during the day.
The oil blends beautifully with other citrus oils such as bergamot FCF and pink grapefruit, with herbal oils such as rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint, and with floral oils such as lavender and ylang ylang.
How is Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free) made?
Unlike cold-pressed lemon, this variant is obtained through steam distillation. The lemon peels are exposed to steam, which releases the volatile aromatic components. This steam is then condensed, and the essential oil separates from the water.
The heavier furocoumarins, including bergapten, cannot be carried along during steam distillation because they are not volatile enough. They remain behind in the distillation residue. Therefore, distilled lemon is naturally non-phototoxic.
The scent is slightly less full and sharper at the top than the cold-pressed version, but the lemon characteristic remains clearly present. For applications where phototoxicity is an issue, this small loss of scent is far outweighed by the practical advantages.
Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free)
Non-phototoxic, so safe for day care
The main advantage over cold-pressed lemon. This variant can be processed in day creams, body lotions, deodorants and all other products that are worn on the skin during the day.
Works uplifting and clarifying
The vibrant aroma of lemon uplifts the tired mind and helps with focus and concentration. An excellent choice for a work diffuser or morning shower gel.
Regulates sebum production
Lemon has a naturally astringent effect and is gladly processed in formulations for oily or combination skin. It can help refine pores and bring the skin into balance.
Protects through antioxidants
The oil contains antioxidants that can help protect the skin against free radicals, contributing to a healthy, youthful appearance.
Versatile in cosmetics and household
The distilled lemon, due to its non-phototoxic character, is suitable for a broader range of applications than the cold-pressed variant.
How do you use Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free)?
Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on the skin. For homemade care, we recommend a working dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 gram product). Read the explanation at the bottom for more information. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter.
In a day cream or day serum
The big advantage of this distilled version: you can safely process the lemon oil in day care without worrying about sun exposure. Especially nice for oily or combination skin that can use some extra balance.
In a diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in an aroma diffuser and fill your workspace with a fresh, uplifting scent. Combine with lavender for a soft, calming atmosphere, or with peppermint for a focus boost.
In a deodorant
Lemon is a natural sebum regulator and has a fresh aroma, suitable for deodorant formulations. Avoid the cold-pressed version for this application and choose the FCF variant.
In soap, shower gel or shampoo
In rinse-off products, the oil does not remain on the skin, making more generous dosages possible. A nice choice for a fresh morning ritual.
In cleaning mixtures
The distilled lemon also works degreasing and is a popular addition to homemade cleaning products.
What is the difference with cold-pressed lemon?
Besides this distilled variant, we also have the cold-pressed Lemon Essential Oil in our range. The cold-pressed variant has a slightly fuller, more vibrant scent, but contains furocoumarins that make it phototoxic on the skin in combination with UV light. Therefore, cold-pressed lemon may not be used in products that are worn on the skin during the day.
Choose this distilled FCF version if you want to process lemon in a day care, deodorant or sun-exposed product. Choose the cold-pressed variant for evening products, perfume, diffuser or rinse-off applications where you want the full citrus characteristic.
Tips when using Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free)
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Citrus oils are more sensitive to oxidation than other essential oils, and good storage significantly extends shelf life.
- Always close the bottle tightly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its scent and effect faster.
- Test first on a small piece of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
- Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.
Precautions and side effects
Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free, distilled) is not phototoxic and can therefore be used without restriction for sunlight. This is the whole point of this distilled variant. However, it remains important to always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.
Our practical working dosage: 1 percent
For homemade care, we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 gram product). Citrus oils naturally contain allergens such as limonene, linalool, citral and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate and you can quickly exceed the legal allergen limits. A working dosage of 1 percent gives you the space to use multiple oils in one recipe without exceeding those limits.
For products that you rinse off, such as soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maxima apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin, always test first on a small spot and wait 24 hours before using on larger surfaces. Not intended for ingestion.

FAQ
