What is Carrageen (Red Seaweed)?

Carrageen is a natural polysaccharide from red seaweed that dissolves completely in water and forms elastic, clear gels with proper processing. The powder is white to off-white and odorless, with a soft, silky feel on the skin. Thanks to its excellent thickening and stabilizing properties, carrageen is widely used in gel serums, creams, lotions, masks and hair styling gels.

On the skin, carrageen forms a light, breathable layer that helps retain moisture and support the skin barrier. It provides an instant soft, comfortable skin feel without tightening or weighing down. Thanks to the natural polysaccharide structure, it keeps formulas beautifully homogeneous and stable, making your product feel cleaner, more even and more pleasant. How do you use Carrageen?

Dosage: Lotions: 0.3–0.6%. Gel serums: 0.8–1.5%. Hair gels: 1.2–2.0%.

Tip: First mix with glycerin or dry ingredients to prevent lumping.

Add to water and heat to 80–85 °C while stirring. Then allow to cool to fully develop the gel structure. A small amount of calcium (e.g. calcium lactate or a bit of sea water) provides extra elasticity. Preserve aqueous formulas appropriately; suitable within pH 4.5–7.
