What is Carrageenan (Red Seaweed)?

Carrageenan is a natural polysaccharide from red seaweed that completely dissolves in water and forms elastic, clear gels when processed correctly. The powder is white to off-white and odorless, with a soft, silky feel on the skin. Thanks to its excellent thickening and stabilizing properties, carrageenan is widely used in gel serums, creams, lotions, masks and hair styling gels.

On the skin, carrageenan forms a light, breathable layer that helps retain moisture and support the skin barrier. It immediately provides a soft, comfortable skin feel without pulling or weighing down. Thanks to the natural polysaccharide structure, it keeps formulas beautifully homogeneous and stable, making your product feel cleaner, more even and more pleasant. It is a mild, inert ingredient that is excellently tolerated even by the most sensitive skin.

How do you use Carrageenan?

Dosage: Lotions: 0.3–0.6%. Gel serums: 0.8–1.5%. Hair gels: 1.2–2.0%.

Tip: First mix with glycerin or dry ingredients to prevent clumping.

Add to water and heat to 80–85 °C while stirring. Then allow to cool to fully build up the gel structure. A small amount of calcium (e.g. calcium lactate or a bit of seawater) provides extra elasticity. Preserve aqueous formulas appropriately; suitable within pH 4.5–7.
