Hyaluronic acid, a much-discussed ingredient. And for good reason. Hyaluronic acid is seen as the ingredient against skin ageing. In this blog, 12 Facts or Myths about Hyaluronic Acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (sugar) that occurs naturally in our skin and connective tissue. The main property of Hyaluronic acid is to attract and retain water in the skin. And not just a little. One Hyaluronic molecule can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water. You can think of it as tiny sponges that completely soak up moisture and swell as a result. You can imagine that hyaluronic acid plays a major role in hydrating the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts water and then retains it in the skin. And that is precisely what is so important for radiant skin!
More than half of all the hyaluronic acid in your body is found in your skin, both in the epidermis (the upper skin layer) and in the deeper skin layers. Hyaluronic acid is the most important 'filler' of the skin matrix. You can think of the skin matrix as the structure of the skin. Components of the skin matrix include proteins (such as collagen and elastin) and fillers that provide the elasticity and moisture balance in the skin. Sufficient moisture gives volume, so that fine lines and wrinkles are reduced. Hyaluronic acid is therefore an indispensable substance in the skin.
Below you will find 12 Facts or Myths about Hyaluronic Acid – which ones do you already know?

1. Hyaluronic acid already occurs naturally in our body
FACT
Until around the age of 20-25, we produce up to 100% hyaluronic acid in our body. Unfortunately, from the age of 25 the amount of hyaluronic acid decreases. By the age of 40 it has fallen by as much as fifty percent. This contributes, among other things, to the ageing of the skin. The skin retains moisture less well, becomes thinner and is less supple and resilient. The result? Fine lines and wrinkles appear and the skin becomes slacker. For most people it is therefore quite important to replenish your supply!
2. Hyaluronic acid has an exfoliating (peeling) effect on the skin
MYTH
Unlike many other acids, Hyaluronic acid does not degrease or exfoliate the skin. On the contrary, it provides intense hydration.
3. Hyaluronic acid has an effect inside the skin
MYTH
Hyaluronic acid only has an effect ON the skin. When you apply Hyaluronic Acid Serum to the skin, it attracts moisture and retains it. This improves superficial dryness lines and fine wrinkles. In addition, Hyaluronic acid also ensures better absorption of other ingredients in your skincare products. They are, as it were, held in place by the Hyaluronic acid, which gives them a longer time to take effect. So Hyaluronic acid mainly works well ON the skin, but not so much IN the skin. Why is that? Hyaluronic molecules are far too large to penetrate the skin. To get Hyaluronic acid into the skin, the molecules have to be processed in such a way that they break apart into smaller pieces. These smaller pieces are called nano-molecules. These nano-molecules are known to be able to penetrate the skin, but they lose their moisture-binding properties. So they are not much use to us.

4. Hyaluronic acid has a temporary effect on the skin
FACT
Hyaluronic acid has only a short life cycle on the skin. The breakdown rate is approximately 30-50% within 24 hours. To maintain the effects of Hyaluronic acid, it is therefore best to add Hyaluronic acid to your daily skincare routine.
5. Hyaluronic acid is extracted from rooster combs
MYTH
Fortunately, the inhumane extraction of Hyaluronic acid from rooster combs has not been done for years. Biotechnology has ensured that there are other options. Our plant-based Hyaluronic acid is therefore obtained from bacterial cultures in a lab. A great deal more efficient and animal-friendly.
6. Hyaluronic acid retains just the right amount of water
FACT
Hyaluronic acid can attract and retain large amounts of moisture. 1 gram of Hyaluronic acid can hold up to six litres of water. Hyaluronic acid ensures that the skin does not retain too much moisture. This would otherwise break down substances that keep the skin surface intact and would actually have the opposite effect. So Hyaluronic acid provides just the right amount of moisture in the skin. Impressive, isn't it?!
7. Hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types
FACT
Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive, mature or normal skin, Hyaluronic acid is suitable for your skin. Hyaluronic acid is very mild on the skin. By nature, Hyaluronic acid is very soothing for the skin. It is therefore also very suitable for skin with blemishes.
8. You can make Hyaluronic Acid Serum yourself
FACT
You can very easily make Hyaluronic Acid Serum yourself. And we even have a recipe and Youtube Tutorial ready for you. The ingredients consist, among other things, of Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerine and Sodium PCA 50%. To get the best effects on the skin, the recipe must contain at least 0.5% Hyaluronic acid. Combined with Glycerine, you have a perfectly hydrating serum.
9. A Hyaluronic Acid Serum is the same as a Hyaluronic Acid filler
MYTH
Hyaluronic acid consists of two components. Hyaluronic acid and Sodium hyaluronate. The hyaluronic acid component is poorly soluble in water, and this is precisely what you find in hyaluronic acid fillers. Because the larger hyaluronic molecules are injected into the skin, they have an effect deeper in the skin. Sodium hyaluronate is a salt obtained from hyaluronic acid. It has the same benefits and is soluble in water, which makes it much easier to process into cosmetics.
You can use Hyaluronic acid during pregnancy
FACT
Because of the changes in the skin during pregnancy, Hyaluronic acid can actually be a very pleasant ingredient. More than 90% of women experience a change in their skin during pregnancy. The skin can become drier, oilier or more dehydrated. Hyaluronic acid ensures that the skin stays wonderfully hydrated.

11. Hyaluronic acid is best applied to damp skin
FACT
Always apply Hyaluronic acid to damp skin. Otherwise the Hyaluronic acid has nothing to absorb. It is best to apply a hydrating cream afterwards so that you lock in the moisture.
12. Hyaluronic acid is THE anti-ageing ingredient
FACT
We can certainly conclude that Hyaluronic acid is THE anti-ageing ingredient. Thanks to its strong attraction of moisture and its moisture-binding properties, your skin will look fuller and younger and receive a well-deserved hydration boost!
