What is the difference between Baking Soda, Soda and Baking Powder? Baking Soda is not the same as ordinary Soda and Baking Powder. Ordinary Soda (Sodium carbonate) is much more aggressive and is also called cleaning soda. This explains exactly what it is now often used for, namely cleaning. Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate) is widely used for baking. Because the carbon dioxide in Baking Soda is released as soon as it comes into contact with acids, the dough or batter rises. Baking Powder is a mixture of Baking Soda and an acid.

In our search for sustainable alternatives, Baking Soda comes up time and time again! Despite all the different names, for us ‘all-rounder’ is really the name that best describes the product.
Baking Soda is a mineral substance that occurs naturally in rocks. It is an environmentally friendly substance that is extracted from the mineral ‘trona’. Sodium bicarbonate is a substance produced by the body itself and acts as a buffer to keep the pH value, or acidity, in the body balanced.
It is an alkaline salt that degreases, deacidifies, descales and absorbs odours, which is why we consider it an essential product in a sustainable household.
What is the difference between Baking Soda, Soda and Baking Powder?

Stuck-on leftovers
Those annoying stuck-on leftovers in the oven… are a thing of the past! Sprinkle a little Baking Soda on a clean, damp sponge and scrub well. Then rinse thoroughly with water. Really stubborn stains? Sprinkle some Baking Soda on the bottom, spray with water using a plant sprayer to moisten it and leave to soak for a few hours. The next day you can clean the oven super easily!
Unpleasant smells in the bin
Prevent unpleasant smells in your bin by sprinkling some Baking Soda on the bottom.
Removing grease from a pan
Baking Soda is a fantastic degreaser. Make a paste of water and Baking Soda and apply it to the greasy spots. Rinse off after a few minutes.
Clogged drain
A clogged drain? Not anymore! Put a cup of Baking Soda down the drain, pour half a litre of vinegar over it and your pipes will fizz clean!
What does Baking Soda do with Vinegar?
If you mix Baking Soda and Vinegar, a lot of carbon dioxide gas is released. This forms bubbles. This is what makes Baking Soda work so well at neutralising odours and removing stains, but it therefore also produces a fizzing reaction.
Throw a cup of Baking Soda into the toilet water and leave it to soak for an hour. Then clean the toilet with a brush and flush. Ready for a thorough clean? Throw a cup of Baking Powder into the toilet and pour a cup of vinegar over it. Let it fizz for a few minutes and then clean the toilet with a brush.
Bright white laundry, that’s what we all want! Add half a cup of Baking Soda to your liquid detergent and your white laundry will be exactly as white as the day you bought it.
Carpet
Want to freshen up your carpet again? Sprinkle some Baking Soda on the carpet, leave it to soak in for a few hours and then vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Add a few drops of essential oil to the Baking Soda to instantly fill the living room with your favourite scent!
Flowers
You want to enjoy the beautiful bunch of flowers on the table for as long as possible. A small teaspoon of Baking Soda will make your flowers shine and stay beautiful for much longer.
Sprinkle Baking Soda into the joints between the paving stones to kill small weeds and to prevent new ones from growing.
Babies and their cuddly toys, inseparable! So the teddy bears regularly need a freshen-up too. For a quick clean, sprinkle Baking Soda on the cuddly toy, leave it to soak in for a few minutes and brush off the residue!
Baking Soda is also ideal for cleaning baby bottles. Fill the bottles with warm water, add a teaspoon of Baking Soda and give them a good shake! Rinse afterwards with water. For an extra thorough clean, you can leave the bottles to soak overnight in a mixture of water and Baking Soda.
Deodorant
‘Ordinary’ deodorants often contain ingredients that you would do better to avoid. You can read which ones these are here.
Baking Soda absorbs moisture and has a cleansing effect, which is why it is very nice to add to your DIY deodorant. Human sweat is actually odourless, did you know that? Sweat only develops an odour when it comes into contact with bacteria on the skin. Baking Soda absorbs moisture without clogging your sweat glands and neutralises odours. You can make your own deodorant very easily! Mix 4 tablespoons of Arrowroot with 4 tablespoons of Baking Soda and add this to 6 tablespoons of coconut oil. You can then add a few drops of essential oil for your own favourite scent!
DIY bath bomb

Toothbrush
Do your toothbrushes ever need a clean? Dissolve a little Baking Soda in an equal amount of water, leave your toothbrushes in it overnight and enjoy a clean toothbrush in the morning.
Mouthwash
Nothing is as unpleasant as bad breath. Make your own mouthwash by mixing Baking Soda into a glass of water. Gargle for a moment and your breath will be completely fresh again. With a mixture of coconut oil, Baking Soda and, optionally, peppermint oil, you can also make a really nice toothpaste, for wonderfully clean teeth!
Want to make the scented bags in your wardrobe more sustainable? Fill a scented bag with Baking Soda and place it in your wardrobe. For a delightful scent sensation, add a few drops of essential oil. Go, for example, for relaxing lavender or for fresh orange oil.
While changing your bed, give a thought to your mattress too! Sprinkle some Baking Soda on it, then leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it up again. Now that’s clean sleeping!
Baking Soda is a star at trapping odours. The acids are neutralised during the chemical reaction. The acids, which are the cause of the unpleasant smells, are not just masked but completely removed!
Your ever-faithful four-legged friend or cheerful house cat are just as happy with Baking Soda as we are. Sprinkle some Baking Soda into your dog’s coat and brush it out very thoroughly to remove odours, or sprinkle some Baking Soda in the litter tray to absorb odours.
