Most antiperspirants contain aluminium (aluminium chloride). The reason aluminium is used is that it has an anti-perspirant effect. Aluminium can block the exit of the sweat glands. It essentially forms a barrier against sweat, which sounds quite pleasant. But sweating serves a purpose. Aluminium disrupts the perspiration process, so that not only moisture but also waste products cannot be cleared away. You do want to prevent sweat odours, but not sweating itself!
Aluminium is an antiperspirant. An antiperspirant blocks the openings of the sweat glands for a prolonged period, and therefore also the production of sweat. The metal salts form a plug that temporarily blocks the sweat glands. So you sweat less when you use a deodorant with aluminium. Sounds quite nice, doesn't it?
The function of sweating
Sweating, it's part of life… did you know that it is also very useful? Sweating has a very important function for our body. Sweating is important for regulating body temperature. Waste products are also eliminated through sweating.
An unpleasant smell
Sweat does not smell by itself. It is an odourless bodily fluid. Only when it comes into contact with the bacteria present on the skin does an unpleasant odour develop.
The difference between hormone sweat and ordinary sweat
There are two types of sweat glands. Eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands. Ordinary sweat is produced by eccrine sweat glands. This sweat is therefore odourless and only starts to smell when it comes into contact with bacteria on the skin. These sweat glands mainly respond to temperature. When hormones surge through the body during puberty, the apocrine sweat glands also begin to work. These mainly respond to stress and emotions. The sweat that these glands produce has a strong smell and is what we call hormone sweat.

Aluminium does its job well, but unfortunately the ingredient is rather toxic to the body.
Aluminium blocks the sweat glands. This can cause the sweat glands to become clogged and disrupts the process of removing waste products. Irritated underarm skin can be the result!
Aluminium disrupts the hormone balance. Unfortunately, aluminium does not just stay on your skin but is absorbed by the lymphatic system. This allows it to spread throughout the body and disturb the hormone balance in your body.
Aluminium causes yellow stains. Not unimportant… aluminium is the cause of the yellow stains on clothing. It produces a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with sweat and cotton.
'Ordinary' deodorants are often based on alcohol combined with synthetic fragrances and parabens as preservatives. Deodorant sprays also frequently contain propellant (butane, isobutane or propane). So not ideal either.

Plenty of reasons to switch to a natural deodorant. With a natural deodorant you therefore have:
No irritation of the underarm skin
No blocking of the sweat glands
No negative effects on the hormone balance in your body
Good temperature regulation of your body
Good elimination of sweat and waste products
No yellow stains on your clothing
Of course, there are good natural ready-made deodorants on the market. A healthy deodorant is at the very least a deodorant without aluminium, alcohol, synthetic fragrance and parabens. If you want to make your own deodorant, you have several options. Which ingredients can you add?
This powder absorbs moisture better than anything, so you will be less troubled by unwanted perspiration.
Ensures that odours are neutralised immediately as soon as the sweat reaches the skin. Sodium bicarbonate raises the skin's pH value so that no bacteria can survive on the skin. In addition, sodium bicarbonate absorbs sweat. Not all of it, but a portion. This makes it seem as though you sweat less. Do take note: do you have sensitive skin? Sodium bicarbonate raises the skin's pH and can irritate your skin.
Magnesium is extracted from seawater and neutralises body odours. Like Sodium bicarbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide has a high pH value. Sensitive skin reacts much less strongly to it, and Magnesium Hydroxide is therefore an ideal substitute for Sodium bicarbonate.
Protects against sweat odour and acts on the bacteria that cause the sweat odour (ideal for hormone sweat)
Zinc ricinoleate
Zinc ricinoleate is extracted from a fatty acid derived from castor oil called ricinoleic acid.
The zinc salt of ricinoleic acid is ricinoleate. Zinc ricinoleate encapsulates unpleasant odours so that your sweat odour is not spread. This can work for up to 24 hours.
