Description
Discover the beauty secret of Moroccan women
Ghassoul (or rhassoul) is a volcanic, pinkish to beige-coloured clay found exclusively in the
Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The word ghassoul comes from the Arabic word 'ghassala' which means 'to wash' or 'to wash away'. The clay has been used in Morocco for generations since the 12th century as a natural hair and skin cleanser. It is used as a face mask, but also as a body mask and even as a hair mask. Coating your body with ghassoul clay is part of the hammam ritual, a traditional Arab bath & body treatment.
Ghassoul clay is rich in the minerals silica, magnesium, potassium and iron. The clay cleanses your skin gently, refines your pores and over time you will see an improvement in skin texture and have a clear, radiant skin with less dryness.
Ghassoul clay also cleanses your hair and scalp thoroughly and removes residue from styling products. Also wonderful if you have oily hair. For thin and lifeless hair, a hair mask with ghassoul is also great for creating more volume!
How to use ghassoul clay
Put 1 tablespoon of clay in a glass or stone bowl, slowly add 3 tablespoons of water and stir (with a wooden or plastic spoon, no metal!) until a firm but spreadable mixture forms. If it's too thick add more water, if it's too thin add more clay.
Apply the mask to your face, leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse off with water. Never let the clay dry completely, as this will dry out your skin too much! Of course, you can also apply the mask to the rest of your body. Simply use more clay and follow the same instructions. Afterwards, enjoy beautifully soft skin! You can use this gentle clay daily.
For use in your hair, mix the clay in the same way until you have enough to massage into your hair and scalp. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse your hair in the shower. The clay may dry out your hair somewhat; if you experience this, you can also mix a small amount of the clay into your regular shampoo and wash your hair as usual.
Note: Ghassoul clay can affect dyed hair as the hair dye can react to the minerals in ghassoul clay.
