What is diatomaceous earth?

Diatomaceous earth consists of pulverized fossils of a specific type of plankton, called diatoms, that originated thousands of years ago. This is what it looks like under a microscope. We know, weird right? →

Diatomaceous earth consists almost entirely of silica (around 80-90%). Besides silica, diatomaceous earth is also rich in calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper and is wonderful to use as a gentle scrub and mask to mildly cleanse the skin and remove dirt and dead skin cells. And the minerals will give your skin an immediate boost!

It's also a valuable addition to your oral care routine thanks to its mildly abrasive properties. Diatomaceous earth helps polish away spots and discoloration from your teeth.

How do you use it?

For your skin as a gentle scrub or mask, you can mix diatomaceous earth with some water, aloe vera juice or oil and apply it to your skin. Gently massage it in with your fingertips or let it sit on your face for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

If you want to use it as part of your oral care routine, you can sprinkle a little diatomaceous earth over your toothpaste on your toothbrush and then brush your teeth. Because it has abrasive properties and works effectively, you only need to use a small amount, and it's not necessary to use it every day.
