What is diatomaceous earth?

Diatomaceous earth consists of pulverized fossils of a certain type of plankton, called diatoms, that were formed thousands of years ago. This is what it looks like under a microscope. We know, strange right? →

Diatomaceous earth consists almost entirely of silica (about 80-90%), a substance that is important for healthy development of skin, hair and nails. Besides silica, diatomaceous earth is also rich in calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper and is wonderful to use as a gentle scrub and mask to mildly cleanse the skin and remove dirt and dead skin cells. And the minerals will give your skin an immediate boost!

It is also a valuable addition to your oral care routine due to its mildly abrasive properties. Diatomaceous earth reduces stains and discoloration on your teeth without damaging the enamel.

How do you use it?

For use on your skin as a gentle scrub or mask, you can mix diatomaceous earth with some water, aloe vera juice or oil and apply it to your skin. Massage it gently with your fingertips or leave it on your face for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

If you want to use it as part of your oral care, you can sprinkle a little diatomaceous earth over your toothpaste on your toothbrush and then brush your teeth. Because it has abrasive properties and works effectively, you only need to use a small amount, and it's also not necessary to use it every day.
