Description
What are Soap Nuts?
Soap nuts are nuts that grow on the soapberry tree (Sapindus). They are also called 'soap nuts', because these magical nuts contain 'saponin'. When you combine the shells of the nuts with water, a soap-like foam is created that can be used as a natural detergent. Indian Soap Nuts contain 100% natural saponins (plant glycoside). These substances form a soap-like solution in water with unparalleled washing power.
Now the Sapindus, which naturally occurs in North India and Nepal, doesn't need to wash itself of course. Instead, the tree uses the saponin to protect itself against natural enemies. The Indian population has been aware of the cleansing properties of soap nuts for centuries and has been using the shells for ages to wash clothing made of cotton, wool and silk. But it's also a fantastic all-purpose cleaner and lovely shampoo.
Benefits
Cleansing
The soap nuts have a cleansing effect on textiles, household surfaces, but also on hair and body. A shampoo that doesn't sting the eyes: ideal! With its cleansing power, the soap nut also cleans and refreshes your whites and colored laundry.
Biodegradable
The soap nuts can be used several times in the washing machine, about 2 to 3 times. After that you put them in the compost, because they are completely biodegradable. Ideal for your conscious lifestyle or zero waste household.
What can you use it for?
There are various ways to prepare soap nuts for use. We mention the following methods, but would of course love to hear if you have more tips for us!
In the washing machine
Put about 5 soap nuts in a wash bag and place it in the washing drum. This bag replaces your normal detergent and fabric softener. Or pour some of the liquid you make with the recipe below into an eco-friendly cup and place in the washing machine.
All-purpose cleaner/Shampoo/Liquid detergent
Place the soap nuts in a blender and add water. About 100 to 150 grams of nuts to 1 liter of water. Mix until you see the water starting to turn brown and you see some foam. Strain over a glass bottle, so you're left with a smooth liquid: your homemade cleaner. Use as shampoo, shower gel, liquid detergent or all-purpose cleaner. In the refrigerator it keeps for about two weeks, but you can also freeze it.
In the garden
Do you have used soap nuts left over? Sprinkle these between your plants in the garden. It repels slugs and other natural enemies.
What is so special about Soap Nuts?
Something to clean? You need nothing more than the multifunctional soap nut. The soap-like substance that is released when using soap nuts is cleansing and caring. The saponin from soap nuts is mild and therefore also suitable for the skin. A beautiful product for your zero waste lifestyle, because after use you sprinkle the nuts in the garden to protect your plants against unwanted enemies. The circle is complete again!
