Description
What is Stearyl Alcohol?
Stearyl alcohol is a long-chain fatty alcohol (C18) of plant origin and comes in the form of odorless, white pastilles. The neutral scent makes it an ideal base for any type of formula, without overpowering or disturbing off-notes. Once it melts in the warm oil phase, it provides a velvety soft, smooth skin feel in creams, lotions and balms.
In skincare, stearyl alcohol is known for soothing, comfort and supporting the skin barrier. It helps reduce transepidermal moisture loss and keeps the skin supple, even when it tends to feel dry quickly. Due to its mild character, it works pleasantly with all skin types, including skin that reacts easily or needs extra care.

How do you use Stearyl Alcohol?
Use: You add Stearyl Alcohol to the oil phase of your recipe. It melts at a temperature of 60–70°C. Dosage: Lotions & serums: 0.5–3%; Creams & body butters: 2–5%; Conditioners: 0.5–2%; Solid sticks & balms: 3–10%.
Melting and processing: Melting temperature: 60–70°C. Stearyl Alcohol must be completely melted to integrate well into the fat phase. Feel free to make the fat phase a bit warmer (up to 75°C) if you're working with solid butters or other hard-to-melt ingredients. Processing: Always add to the oil phase of your recipe; melt completely in the fat phase before emulsifying; always combine it with a primary emulsifier like Olivem 1000, Vegetal Montanov 68; allow to cool in a controlled manner for a beautiful, even texture. Tip: Because Stearyl Alcohol is a structure former, cooling too quickly can cause slight grittiness or white spots. Letting it cool calmly gives the most professional result.
