Description
What is Raspberry Seed Oil?
Raspberry seed oil is extracted from the tiny seeds of the raspberry (Rubus idaeus). Our raspberry seed oil is cold-pressed and unrefined, with a light cloudy, yellowish to orange-yellow color and a mild fruity, nutty scent. The oil is known for its exceptionally high content of unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, making it one of the most active plant oils for skincare.
How is Raspberry Seed Oil made?
With cold-pressed, unrefined oil, no heat above 30 degrees is used during pressing, and no solvents are used. Afterwards, the oil is filtered and ready for use. The yield is low: from 100 kilos of seeds, only 10 to 23 kilos of oil is produced, making raspberry seed oil a precious product.
Why is Raspberry Seed Oil so special?
Raspberry seed oil has an exceptionally high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The oil consists of approximately 50 to 60% linoleic acid (omega 6) and 25 to 35% alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3). That high proportion of omega 3 is exceptional for a plant oil and is what makes the oil so renowned for barrier repair and skincare.
Additionally, raspberry seed oil naturally contains carotenoids (including beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A), polyphenols and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E). This combination makes raspberry seed oil one of the most antioxidant-rich plant oils that exist.
Benefits of Raspberry Seed Oil for your skin
Supports the skin barrier
The high content of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid supports the natural skin barrier and helps with dry, thirsty or irritated skin.
Powerful antioxidant action
Raspberry seed oil is rich in polyphenols, vitamin E and carotenoids. These antioxidants help protect the skin against free radicals and contribute to a supple, healthy radiance.
Soothes irritated skin
The high content of unsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols helps calm red or irritated skin.
Benefits of Raspberry Seed Oil for your hair
Nourishes dry and damaged hair
The rich composition of unsaturated fatty acids makes dry and damaged hair softer and gives it shine.
How do you use Raspberry Seed Oil?
For your skin, apply a few drops of raspberry seed oil to cleansed skin and massage in gently. Because the oil absorbs fairly quickly, it's suitable for both morning and evening use. Due to the orange-yellow color, the oil can slightly tint light skin, so for daytime use it's sometimes nice to mix with a lighter carrier oil like jojoba oil or squalane. For your hair, massage a few drops into the lengths and ends of damp hair.
Raspberry seed oil is also a beautiful ingredient in DIY face serums and oils, especially in combination with other active oils like rosehip oil or prickly pear seed oil.
Tips when using Raspberry Seed Oil
- Raspberry seed oil has a light orange-yellow color that comes from the carotenoids in the seeds. On light skin, this can temporarily give a slight yellow tint.
- The oil oxidizes relatively quickly due to the high content of unsaturated fatty acids. Store the bottle cool and dark, and preferably use within 6 months after opening.
- Never heat raspberry seed oil above 40 degrees. Always add the oil in the cool phase to DIY recipes.
- Various websites claim that raspberry seed oil naturally has a high SPF. This is based on one in-vitro study from 2000 that has never been properly replicated. We therefore do not recommend raspberry seed oil as a replacement for real sunscreen.
