Description
What is Lemon Essential Oil?
Lemon Essential Oil is one of the most recognizable and versatile citrus oils in aromatherapy. The fresh, vibrant aroma instantly brings sunshine into your home. The Latin name is Citrus Limon, and the oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the lemon fruit. The color is light yellow, sometimes with a greenish tint, and the scent is fresh, sweet-sour and fruity.
This oil naturally contains a high percentage of limonene (60 to 75%), alongside smaller amounts of beta-pinene, gamma-terpinene and citral. These natural components are responsible for the vibrant scent, the cleansing action and the supportive properties on the skin.
Lemon blends beautifully with other citrus oils like bergamot and pink grapefruit, with spicy oils like rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint, and with floral oils like lavender and ylang ylang. It is a classic top note in perfume blends and a popular ingredient in homemade cleaning products.
How is Lemon Essential Oil made?
Lemon Essential Oil is extracted through cold pressing, also called expression or cold pressing. In this process, the lemon peels are mechanically compressed, causing the oil glands in the peel to burst open and release the essential oil. Since no heat is involved, the natural aroma molecules remain optimally preserved. This is also why cold-pressed citrus oils smell so fresh and recognizable.
The downside of cold pressing is that the heavier, non-volatile molecules also come along. This group includes the furocoumarins. These substances give the oil its depth, but also make it phototoxic on the skin in combination with UV light.
Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil
Works uplifting and clarifying
The vibrant aroma of lemon perks up the tired mind and helps with focus and concentration. It is an excellent choice for a diffuser at your workplace or study room when you want to think clearly.
Regulates sebum production and supports the skin
Lemon has a natural astringent action and is gladly incorporated in formulations for oily or combination skin. It can help refine pores and bring the skin into balance.
Protects through antioxidants
The oil contains antioxidants that can help protect the skin against free radicals, contributing to a healthy, youthful appearance.
Makes blends lighter and fresher
A few drops of lemon in a blend can instantly make a too heavy or too sweet scent lighter, fresher and more vibrant. An indispensable ingredient for perfume and diffuser blends.
Versatile in household
Lemon Oil works degreasing and is a popular addition to homemade cleaning products.
How do you use Lemon Essential Oil?
Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using on the skin. For homemade skincare we recommend a working dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 gram product). The IFRA maximum is higher at 2 percent due to phototoxicity, but 1 percent is safer in practice because citrus oils naturally contain allergens that quickly accumulate when you combine multiple essential oils. Read the explanation below for more information. Suitable carriers are for example Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Shea Butter.
In a night serum against impurities
Lemon can be a beautiful addition to an evening serum for oily or combination skin. Only apply to skin that will not be exposed to sunlight in the hours after.
In a diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in an aroma diffuser and fill your house with a fresh, uplifting scent. Combine with lavender for a soft, calming atmosphere, or with peppermint for an energetic focus boost.
In soap, shower gel or shampoo
In rinse-off products the oil does not remain on the skin, making more generous dosages possible. A fine choice for a fresh morning ritual.
In cleaning mixtures
Lemon Oil works degreasing and can be added to homemade cleaning products. A few drops in a bottle with water and vinegar gives a fresh scent and helps with cleaning surfaces.
Transform your blend
Have you made a diffuser blend that smells just a bit too heavy? Or are you not completely happy with the scent of your massage oil? Adding a drop of lemon works wonders, the blend immediately becomes lighter and fresher.
What is the difference with the distilled, FCF-free version?
Besides this cold-pressed lemon we also have a Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free, distilled) in our range. This variant is obtained through steam distillation, leaving the furocoumarins behind in the residue. The aroma is somewhat less full and slightly sharper at the top than the cold-pressed version, but the great advantage is that this oil is not phototoxic. Therefore it can be used without problems in day creams, body lotions and other products for daytime use.
Choose the cold-pressed variant if you want the full, classic lemon aroma for evening products, perfume, diffuser or rinse-off applications. Choose the distilled FCF version if you want to incorporate lemon in a day care or sun-exposed product.
Tips when using Lemon Essential Oil
- Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Citrus oils are more sensitive to oxidation than other essential oils, and good storage considerably extends the shelf life.
- Always close the bottle well after use. Through contact with air the oil can lose its scent and effect faster.
- Test first on a small piece of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
- Always work with grams and percentages, not with drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.
Points of attention and side effects
Lemon Essential Oil (cold-pressed) is phototoxic. The oil naturally contains furocoumarins, a group of molecules that react with skin cells under influence of UV light and can cause skin damage. This can lead to blistering, redness and long-lasting hyperpigmentation, sometimes for months.
According to the IFRA 51st Amendment (2023) the legal maximum in leave-on products on the skin is 2 percent. For a skincare product of 100 grams that means maximum 2 grams lemon oil. For a serum of 30 ml that is approximately 0.6 grams. The IFRA maximum serves as an upper limit, not as recommended dosage.
Our practical working dosage: 1 percent
For homemade skincare we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 gram product). Citrus oils naturally contain allergens like limonene, linalool, citral and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate and you can quickly exceed the legal allergen limits. A working dosage of 1 percent gives you room to use multiple oils in one recipe without going over those limits.
For products that you rinse off, like soap, shower gel or shampoo, more generous maxima apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.
If you want the fresh lemon aroma in a product that is worn during the day, choose our Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free, distilled). This variant contains no furocoumarins and has no restriction for sunlight.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin always test first on a small spot and wait 24 hours before using on larger surfaces. Always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.
