Description
What is Bakuchiol Oil?
Bakuchiol Oil is extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant originally from India that has been used in Ayurveda for centuries for skin and hair. The plant is also called babchi, which is why you sometimes encounter this oil under the name babchi oil or bakuchi oil. Our oil is cold-pressed and has a light brown color and a sweet, nutty scent.
Bakuchiol Oil versus pure bakuchiol
Pure bakuchiol is an isolated molecule that is extracted from the plant through chemical processes, often in concentrations of 95 to 99%. Our oil is different: a cold-pressed vegetable oil in which bakuchiol is naturally present. According to our supplier, our oil contains approximately 13.8% bakuchiol, which is on the high side for cold-pressed variants and supports its effectiveness. The remaining 86% consists of the natural fatty acids and plant compounds from the seed, making the oil gentler and more broadly nourishing than an isolated bakuchiol.
How is Bakuchiol Oil made?
The seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant are cracked and cold-pressed. With cold-pressed oil, no heat above 30 degrees is used during pressing, and no solvents are used. After that, the oil is filtered and ready for use.
Bakuchiol Oil and psoralens
An important fact about bakuchiol oil: the Psoralea corylifolia plant naturally contains psoralens and furanocoumarins, substances that can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. However, these substances are found in the fruits, leaves and pods of the plant, not in the seeds. Because our oil is only pressed from the seeds, it is naturally psoralen-free. This is an important difference from some other bakuchiol oils on the market, and means that our oil can also be safely used on the skin during the day.
Why is Bakuchiol Oil so special?
Bakuchiol is often seen as a natural counterpart to retinol. Scientific research has shown that bakuchiol can have similar effects on the skin as retinol, namely supporting cell renewal, stimulating collagen production and softening fine lines and pigmentation spots. The difference lies in the action: bakuchiol is much gentler on the skin, rarely causes irritation and is suitable for almost every skin type.
Benefits of Bakuchiol Oil for your skin
Pro-age action without irritation
Bakuchiol supports cell renewal and stimulates collagen production, which helps soften fine lines and promote a firmer and smoother skin appearance.
Evens out the skin
The oil helps soften pigmentation spots and imperfections and promotes a more even skin tone.
Suitable for sensitive skin
Unlike retinol, bakuchiol rarely causes redness or peeling. This makes the oil also suitable for sensitive or reactive skin.
Light texture
Bakuchiol Oil feels light and absorbs quickly, without leaving a heavy film.
Benefits of Bakuchiol Oil for your hair
Nourishes dry and frizzy hair
The oil makes dry and frizzy hair softer and gives a natural shine. Especially great for curly hair.
Cares for the scalp
A few drops on the scalp before washing can help with a dry or irritated scalp.
How do you use Bakuchiol Oil?
For your face, apply a few drops of bakuchiol oil in the evening (or both morning and evening) to cleansed skin and massage gently. You can use the oil pure or mix it with a lighter carrier oil like jojoba oil or squalane. For your hair, massage a few drops into the lengths and possibly the scalp before washing, let this absorb for 15 to 30 minutes and wash out with your regular shampoo. Bakuchiol Oil is also a great ingredient in DIY pro-age serums and facial oils.
