  2. Why tingling skin is a warning (and not proof that it works)

No pain, no gain? Not in your skincare routine

"No pain, no gain." You hear it often in the world of skincare. You apply a new cream to your face, it stings a little and you think: ah, this is working! But when we at Natural Heroes formulate a product and it starts to tingle on our skin, we know straight away that something is wrong. Your face is, after all, full of nerve fibres lying just beneath the surface of the skin. When a product activates them, it can be a sign of an inflammatory reaction. Literally your skin saying: I don't like this.

And that's something we, as a brand that combines natural ingredients and DIY skincare, are happy to be clear about. We believe in the power of nature, but that power should support your skin, not fight it.

When is tingling actually normal?

Now, there are exceptions. An AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or salicylic acid can, for example, tingle mildly because it temporarily lowers the pH of your skin. That's normal, often lasts only briefly and fades quickly. Essential oils such as menthol or peppermint can also give a cooling, tingling sensation. On your body that's reasonably harmless, but on your face it isn't pleasant. The skin on your face is simply too delicate for those stimuli.

When making your own care products, we see that people are sometimes inclined to add extra amounts of 'active' ingredients. More must be better, right? But it's precisely with homemade serums and creams that it's important to respect the dosages. Too much acid or too much essential oil can cause that slight irritation which ultimately leads to a weakened skin barrier.

When your day cream tingles every day

The real problem arises when your day cream, serum or moisturiser starts to tingle, burn or feel red again every single day. That's a signal that two things may be going on: your skin barrier is damaged, or you are reacting to a specific ingredient. And if you are then under the impression that 'it's working' and you keep going, you keep your skin in a constant state of irritation. In the long term you create problems rather than solving them.

A healthy skin barrier acts like a protective layer. It retains moisture and keeps harmful external factors out. If you strain that barrier time and again with products that sting, your skin will overcompensate or dry out even further. The result? Sensitivity, redness, dryness and sometimes even more blemishes than you started with.

Listen to what your skin is telling you

At Natural Heroes we are hugely enthusiastic about natural ingredients, but above all about respecting your skin. Good skincare feels comfortable. It doesn't feel 'exciting', prickling or burning. Whether you get to work yourself with our base products and active ingredients, or put together your routine with ready-made care: pay attention to what your skin is telling you. Tingling is rarely a good sign.

Practical tip: Always start with a patch test when trying out a new ingredient or homemade product. Apply a little to the inside of your elbow or behind your ear and wait 24 hours. When in doubt, use fewer active ingredients rather than too many. Your skin barrier recovers best at rest, not under constant pressure. Choose ingredients that nourish and support your skin, without that theatrical sensation. Because the best skincare? You can barely even feel it.
