You see it everywhere online: “Just add a bit of vitamin E and your product is protected against bacteria and mould.” Sounds handy, but unfortunately… that's not true.
Vitamin E is a fantastic addition to your DIY recipes, but not for the reason that's often given. Let's set out clearly what vitamin E actually does and when you really need a preservative.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant. That means it helps the oils in your formulation oxidise less quickly — oils turning rancid through oxygen, heat and light.
Vitamin E is not a preservative. It does not protect your product against bacteria, yeasts or mould.
As soon as you use water in your DIY product (creams, lotions, water-based toners), you need a preservative. If your recipe contains only oils and butters, it's usually not necessary — and vitamin E is actually lovely for slowing down oxidation.
