Glycerine is one of the most commonly used ingredients in skincare products. It is, in fact, quite a special product. Many skincare products contain Glycerine. But what is Glycerine and how can you use it?
Glycerine is a substance naturally present in the body that occurs in the horny layer, the upper layer of the skin. It is obtained among other things from rapeseed oil but is soluble in water. As an ingredient, glycerine belongs to the humectants. These are ingredients that attract and retain moisture in the skin. Glycerine can be absorbed very easily by the skin and then binds to water in the skin, so you lose less moisture and your skin stays very well hydrated. Glycerine is even regarded as the best humectant!
Glycerine is therefore a moisturising ingredient. It is absorbed very easily by the skin and ensures that your skin loses less moisture. Glycerine has a positive effect on skin elasticity and the repair of the skin barrier. Glycerine has a very light texture and does not clog the pores, which is why it is suitable for any skin but above all for dehydrated skin.
What is dehydrated skin?
Dehydrated skin lacks water and is usually temporary in nature. This is different from dry skin, which lacks sebum/fats (and often also water). Oily or combination skin types can also be dehydrated. Dehydrated skin can have various causes:
Too much moisture evaporates from the skin, so that moisture is not retained well in the skin
The skin contains too few substances that can retain water
Aggressive ingredients in skincare products strip the skin of natural oils, causing water to escape from the skin.
Glycerine must always be mixed with water. If you were to use it pure on the skin, you would achieve the opposite effect: your skin would actually dry out. The skin cannot cope with this high dose of hydration!
In high concentrations, Glycerine can feel a little sticky. A very nice combination is Glycerine with Hyaluronic acid; both ingredients have a hydrating action and complement each other well.

Or… Make your own Glycerite.
A Glycerite is Glycerine mixed with fresh natural heroes such as dried herbs, cucumber or fresh fruit. It is a Glycerine infusion. Water-containing plant parts are released into the Glycerine. They can convey a fantastic scent and colour and considerably upgrade your Glycerine. You can use dried plant parts, but it is of course much more fun to use fresh vegetables and fruit.
Use your DIY Glycerite to give your face a boost after cleansing. Distribute a few drops over your face, let it absorb for a moment and enjoy a fantastic natural glow! You can then use your favourite (homemade) oil or day cream.
To make a Glycerite, you need water. Normally the Water/Glycerine ratio is 50/50. In this recipe we have made a Glycerite based on cucumber. We used fresh organic cucumber for this. In addition, you must of course always add a preservative, because a water-based care product is a breeding ground for bacteria. The Glycerite now keeps for about 6 months.
Be creative, use fresh vegetables or fruit such as strawberries, cucumber or grapefruit. Use lemon peel or dried herbs or rose petals for a soft pink colour and a lovely scent.
