  2. "No pain, no gain" in skincare: why stinging products are actually a warning

Why "no pain, no gain" absolutely does not apply to your skincare

You'll probably recognise it: you apply a new cream to your face, it stings a little and you think — ah, it's working! A bit of tingling, that's just part of it, right? Well, no. When we at Natural Heroes formulate a product and it tingles on the skin, we know for sure that something isn't right. Because good skincare feels comfortable. Not exciting.

In the world of serums, day creams and moisturisers you often hear the credo no pain, no gain. As if a burning or stinging sensation were proof that the active ingredients are doing their job. But the opposite is true. That tingling feeling is often a signal from your skin that something is wrong. And if you keep ignoring it, in the long run it can actually cause problems.

Your skin is talking to you. Listen to it.

Your face is full of nerve fibres that lie just beneath the surface of the skin. When a product activates these nerves, it can mean that an inflammatory reaction is taking place. Quite literally, your skin is then saying: I don't like this. It is a warning sign you shouldn't ignore, yet one that, in the skincare world, we sadly all too often systematically overlook.

So that stinging or burning sensation is not a sign that your pores are gearing up for a big clean-out or that your skin first needs to get used to it. It is an indication that your skin barrier is under pressure or that your skin is reacting to a specific ingredient that doesn't suit it. And if you then think: it's working, so I'll just keep going, you keep your skin in a constant state of irritation. That is the fastest route to sensitive, overburdened skin.

Exceptions that prove the rule

Now, fortunately, there are exceptions. Some ingredients can cause a mild tingling sensation without there being any immediate damage. Think of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or salicylic acid. These ingredients temporarily lower your skin's pH, which can produce a brief, mild tingling. That is normal and usually passes quickly.

Essential oils such as menthol or peppermint oil can also create a cooling, tingling sensation. On your body that is fairly harmless, but on your face it is not pleasant. The skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive, so these ingredients are better not used there. But these are specific exceptions, not a free pass to ignore every bit of tingling.

When should you be on your guard?

If your day cream, serum or moisturiser tingles or stings every day, something really is going on. It can mean that your skin barrier has been damaged by previous harsh products, or that you are simply reacting to an ingredient in your current routine. Dryness, redness, flaking and that constant feeling of something doing something are not the route to healthy skin.

It is precisely by carrying on with products that sting that you build up problems in the long run. Your skin becomes oversensitive, the barrier no longer functions optimally and you end up in a vicious circle in which you think you need more and more products to fix the so-called problem.

Choose comfort, not sensation

Good skincare is not a fairground ride. It doesn't have to sting, burn or be exciting in any other way to be effective. In fact: the best products for your skin are the ones that support your skin barrier, bring your skin into balance and, yes, simply feel nice and comfortable. Natural, mild ingredients do their work without you feeling a thing.

So listen to what your skin is telling you. If a product doesn't suit you, trust that feeling. Look for mild, natural formulas that nourish the skin without challenging it. Because in the end, happy skin is not skin that stings, but skin that glows effortlessly.
