You know how it goes: you apply a new cream to your face, it stings a little, and you think: ah, it's working! But when I formulate a product and it tingles on my skin, I know straight away: something isn't right. And that's the feeling you should be getting too.
Your face is full of nerve fibres, and they lie just beneath the surface of the skin. If a product activates them, that can signal an inflammatory reaction. Literally your skin saying: I don't like this. If you then carry on anyway because you think it's "working", you keep your skin in a constant state of irritation. And that is precisely how, over time, you create problems rather than solve them.
There are moments when a slight tingling sensation is normal. An AHA or salicylic acid, for example, can tingle mildly because it temporarily lowers your skin's pH. That is brief, mild, and fades quickly. Essential oils such as menthol or peppermint also give a cooling, tingling sensation. On your body that is fairly harmless, but on your face? Not pleasant.
Does your day cream, serum or moisturiser tingle anew every single day? Then something really is going on. Your skin barrier may be damaged, or you may be reacting to a specific ingredient. In both cases, pushing on is the worst thing you can do. Your skin needs rest and repair, not extra irritation.
Good skincare feels comfortable. Not exciting, not prickly, not as though something has to happen. Your skin is not a muscle group that you train through pain — it is a living organ that wants to be treated with respect. Listen to what it is telling you.
Pick up the products you are using now. Does anything tingle on a daily basis? Then consider setting that product aside for at least two weeks, focus on repair with mild, barrier-supporting ingredients, and notice the difference. Your skin will thank you.
Curious which ingredients really support your skin barrier? At naturalheroes.nl you'll find everything you need to make your own nurturing, skin-friendly products.
